Box Score 2 (Kansas City, Mo.) – Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) and
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) combined to go 5-for-7 with three runs scored and drove in seven of the nine runs as Missouri S&T won the opener of the doubleheader against Rockhurst
9-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks took the second game
6-1 to salvage a split.
Rockhurst (20-32, 15-21 GLVC) scored the first run of game one in the home half of the third. A pair of throwing errors put runners at second and third with one out. Sadie Applegate singled to right to drive in Toya Nelson.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) escaped further damage by getting back-to-back groundouts to end the inning.
S&T responded in a big way in the top of the fourth. With one out Schroeder and
Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) worked back-to-back walks. After a strikeout,
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) worked a walk to load the bases.
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) then worked another walk to bring in Schroeder to tie the game at 1-1. Michaelis cleared the bases hitting a grand slam to center field for her third roundtripper of the season. The Lady Miners added to their lead in the fifth when
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) drove home
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) with a single down the left field line to make it 6-1.
S&T put the game away in the sixth when Schroeder hit a three-run double to center field to make it 9-1. The Hawks added a single tally in the home half of the sixth for the final margin.
The Lady Miners had 12 hits in game two led by Michaelis and Schroeder. Briggs and Lybarger had two hits apiece as well. Strope picked up her fourth win of the season pitching a complete game allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Rockhurst raced out to 6-0 lead to start game two scoring two in the first and four in the second. S&T scored their lone run in the seventh inning when Lawson doubled home
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ).
The Lady Miners were held to four hits with Premer, Moore, Lawson and
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) having one each.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) took the loss allowing six runs on seven hits in just 1.2 innings of work. She struck out one and didn't issue a free pass.
S&T (15-36, 12-22 GLVC) closes out its 2012 season on Tuesday when it hosts Illinois Springfield in a make-up doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., at the S&T Softball Field.
