Lady Miners drop 13 inning contest at William Jewell on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Liberty, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped a 13 inning contest 5-3 in the second game of its doubleheader on Saturday at William Jewell in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals won the opening game 3-0 behind a one-hitter from Maria Buckingham.

S&T got off to a good start in game two on Saturday. With one out Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) singled to left then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) reached on an error by the second baseman allowing Schroeder to move to third. Smith went into second uncontested on a steal attempt. Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) reached first with a swinging bunt for a single as no one covered the bag.
On the play Lexy Rozmus went to throw the ball back to the pitcher and she lost the handle on it which allowed Schroeder to score the first run. The Lady Miners couldn't get any more as the next two hitters grounded out.

William Jewell (23-22, 17-14 GLVC) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second. Erica Scowley drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly down the left field line. The other two runners moved up a base as the throw went through to the plate and got away from Smith. Eileen Greenwood hit a single off Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves)'s glove to score Ashlee Nation. Kelsey Teneycke tried to score on second from the play as Rizzo threw her out at the plate to end the inning.

It remained that way until the top of the fifth. Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) singled with one out. With Schroeder at bat Lawson stole second. With two outs Smith bounced a single through the left side to score Lawson from second to the game. S&T had a chance to take the lead in the sixth as Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) and Hannah Jokisch (De Soto, Kan./De Soto) reached to start the frame. Kasilda Miller (Bourbon, Mo./) advanced the runners to second and third with a groundout to first, but the Lady Miners couldn't get the big hit as Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) bounced out to the pitcher as Runyan was thrown out at the plate, then Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) grounded out to first to end the inning.

The Cardinals had their chance in the bottom of the sixth loading the bases with one out. Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) came on with runners at the corner. She walked the first hitter then got a pop out to Rizzo and a foul out to Miller to end the inning.

S&T took the lead in the eighth. Runyan led off the inning with a walk. After back-to-back strikeouts Rizzo reached on an infield single advancing Runyan to second. Briggs put the Lady Miners on top doubling off the left field fence to drive home Runyan.
Lawson couldn't add to the lead as she struck out swinging to end the inning.

In the home half of the eighth Emily Cline popped one up on the left side of the infield that Kasilda Miller (Bourbon, Mo./) lost in the sun falling for an error. A sacrifice moved Cline to second and she scored on Rachel Hayden's double off the fence in right center.

The game remained tied until the 13th though both sides had its chances to win the game. With one out Taylor Brown doubled off the center field fence. One batter later Nation hit a walk-off two run homer over the centerfield fence to win it.

S&T had 14 hits in the contest led by Runyan with three. Lawson, Rizzo, Schroeder and Briggs had two apiece. Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) suffered the loss allowing the two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. She came on relief to start the 10th. Strope went the first 5.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Duncan finished the sixth and pitched the next three innings allowing a run, unearned, on two hits with two punchouts and two walks.

In the opener on Saturday, it was a pitcher's duel between Buckingham and Keal for the first four innings. Buckingham limited S&T to one hit while Keal held the Cardinals hitless the first 4.2 innings. The Cardinals scored twice in the fifth and added another in the sixth to secure the win.

Keal went the distance allowing three runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks. Rizzo had the lone hit for the Lady Miners.

S&T (14-35, 11-21 GLVC) returns to action on Sunday when it takes on Rockhurst University in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
