Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball team was held to just six hits as it was swept by the Quincy Hawks
2-1 and
5-0 in a doubleheader on Monday at the S&T Softball Field.
In the opener on Monday the Hawks (23-22, 15-13 GLVC) broke on top in the fourth inning. Emma Topps led off with a triple to right center and scored on the next pitch on Monica Gray's single back up the middle. S&T (14-31, 11-17 GLVC) tied it in the home half of the frame.
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) led off with a single to first and went to second on a wild pitch.
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) sacrificed over to third with one out and
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) brought her home on a groundout to short.
The game remained tied until the sixth. Topps led off with a single to left and went to second on a sacrifice from Gray. Alanna Viken drove her home with a single to center. The Lady Miners had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. They loaded the bases with two outs thanks to a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch.
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) was called out on strikes on a questionable pitch to end the game.
S&T had two hits in the contest with Michaelis and
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) each recording one.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) was the hard luck loser in the opener giving up two runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out three and walked one.
In the second game Quincy broke on top with a run in the first inning. It would add to its lead with a run in the fourth and then broke it open with a three-run fifth. The Lady Miners threatened in the seventh loading the bases with no one out but couldn't score.
S&T had four hits in game two led by
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) with two. Smith and
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) had one apiece.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. She struck out four and walked one.
The Lady Miners are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on the Drury Panthers in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
