Box Score 2 (Joplin, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped an 11 inning heartbreaker
3-2 to Missouri Southern on Wednesday in Joplin. In the nightcap S&T (14-29) trailed 4-1 heading into the sixth and scored three in the sixth but lost
5-4 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
The game was scoreless until the fourth.
Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) led off the inning with a walk.
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came into run for her and advanced to second on
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove)'s sacrifice bunt to third. With two outs
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) blooped a single in front of the right fielder scoring Moore to make it 1-0.
The Lions (15-28) answered in the bottom of the frame getting a two out single from Ashley Poteat to score Brooke Hurley from second. Hurley had a one out double to left center.
The game remained tied until the eighth.
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) ran for
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) at second. With two outs
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) worked a walk to put two on.
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) lined a single off the third baseman's glove to score Lawson with the go-ahead run.
MSSU answered in the bottom of the eighth. With one out Brianna Fulkerson hit a chopper back to
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South). Keal threw one over
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic)'s head allowing Brooklyn Farrell to score the tying run. Fulkerson went to second on the play but was stranded there.
The Lions had a chance to win it in the 10
th with the winning run at third and one out Farrell grounded one to
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) who fired to Smith at the plate to retire Chloe Brown. MSSU won it in the 11
th on a walk-off single from Hurley to score from second.
Keal went the distance allowing three runs, one earned on six hits in 10.2 innings of work. She struck out three and walked one. Briggs, Smith, Glenn and Schroeder had one hit each.
In the nightcap on Wednesday, S&T broke on top in the second. Premer reached on an error by the shortstop. She advanced to second on a single off the pitcher's glove. Glenn drove home Premer with a single to left center. Both runners advanced as the throw home hit off the pitcher's foot. The Lady Miners couldn't take advantage of the gift as the next three hitters were retired.
The Lions tied the game in the home half of the second. Shelby Romines led off and singled and went to third on a wild pitch when Smith couldn't find the ball. Poteat drove her in with a sacrifice fly to left. MSSU took the lead in the third. With one out
Fulkerson reached on a bunt single to third. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout she went to third on another wild pitch. Hurley walked to put runners at the corner. Romines singled through the left side for a 2-1 advantage.
S&T had a chance to tie the game in the fourth getting the tying to second with one out but couldn't score. The Lions scored two more in the fourth to extend their lead thanks to a wild pitch and a throwing error.
The Lady Miners tied it in the sixth. Smith led off and homered to left for her team leading eighth of the season and her 31
st RBI of the year. Premer reached on an infield single.
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) came onto run for her and advanced to second on Runyan's walk. Glenn sacrificed the runners over with a bunt to the pitcher. Schroeder ripped a single into left to tie the game and went to second on the throw. She eventually went to third but was stranded there.
MSSU had runners at second and third with two outs in the sixth but
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) got Fulkerson to fly to Runyan to end the inning.
S&T got a one out double from Michaelis in the seventh but couldn't score as Smith and Premer popped out to end the inning.
The Lions won it in the seventh Lydia Niemegeers led off with a walk and stole second. She went to third on Romines single down the left field line and went to second on the throw. Duncan got ahead of Poteat 0-2 but Poteat lined the 0-2 offering into right center for the game winner.
Michaelis had three hits to lead the Lady Miners while Schroeder had two RBIs. Duncan took the loss to fall to 1-3. She came on in relief of
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) with one out in the fourth. Duncan tossed the final three innings allowing a run on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.
S&T is back at home this weekend hosting Quincy on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
