Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners had to do it the hard way on Sunday rallying in both games of its doubleheader sweep over Wisconsin-Parkside
8-1 and
9-6 at the S&T Softball Field. S&T has now won four straight and are tied with Drury for the GLVC West Division lead after the first weekend of league action.
The Rangers (0-8, 0-4 GLVC) jumped on top in the opener in the third inning on a solo home run to left center off the bat of Kyla Walczak. The Lady Miners (4-9, 4-0 GLVC) threatened in the home half of the third putting runners at second and third with two away, but
Abby Lunn (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West ) was robbed of a hit by Lexi Sotiros to end the inning.
S&T broke through in the fifth scoring four times.
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) started things off with a single to center. She advanced to second on
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood)'s bunt attempt sliding around the tag.
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) came on to run for Smith.
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) put the Lady Miners on top driving a single to right center scoring Briggs and Schroeder and advancing Rizzo to third. Lunn was robbed again of a hit lining one off the first baseman but right to Sotiros who threw her out at first. She did, however, drive Rizzo in with the third run and
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ), running for Glenn, advanced all the way to third. Moore scored on
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia)'s ground out to Sotiros.
S&T added to its lead in the sixth.
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) tripled over the right fielder's head to lead off the inning. Hayley Schneider came into pitch for Parkside.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) drove in Hatlan with a pinch hit single through the left side.
Lindsey DeForest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway) came back into the contest for Strope and promptly stole second. Briggs drove her in with a single back up the middle to make it 6-1. Schroeder singled to left then both runners moved up on Smith's groundout to the right side. Glenn made it 8-1 driving in Briggs and Schroeder with a single back up the middle.
The Rangers loaded the bases in the seventh with no one out but didn't score.
The Lady Miners banged out 12 hits in the contest led by Briggs with four. Glenn and Hatlan had two apiece.
Keal pitched a complete game allowing one run on seven hits while striking out five and walking five.
In the nightcap UW-Parkside scored four times in the top of the first with the big blow being a three-run homer to left center with two outs off the bat of Bridget Walters.
S&T scored three times in the second cutting the deficit to one. The Lady Miners loaded the bases with two out and Briggs came through singling to left center driving in Duncan and
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove). DeForest also came around to score as the center fielder booted the ball and allowed Briggs to go to second. Schroeder lined out to second to end the inning.
The Rangers added two more in the third to increase their lead to 6-3 on RBI singles from Kirsten Luevano and Walczak.
The Lady Miners tied the game in the third. With one out Strope homered to right center.
Elise Kittrell (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) worked a walk but was erased at second on Duncan's grounder to the shortstop. Runyan doubled home Duncan with a shot to the gap in left center. She would score on Hatlan's double to tie the game.
S&T took the lead in the fourth. With two outs and a runner on first Strope singled to deep right center scoring Glenn. The Lady Miners added to their lead in the sixth with two more runs as Kittrell doubled home Schroeder and Moore to make it 9-6.
Strope slammed the door shut with a 1-2-3 seventh to end the contest.
S&T had 10 hits in the second game led by Strope with three while Briggs and Kittrell had two each. That trio combined to drive in six runs in the contest.
Kittrell started allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits while striking out a batter in 2.2 innings. Strope went the rest of the way allowing no runs on one hit with a strike out and a walk.
S&T will be back in action at home on Wednesday afternoon hosting Central Missouri beginning at 1 p.m.
