Box Score 2 (St. Charles, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners rallied to defeat Lindenwood
2-1 on Wednesday and gain a split in the doubleheader. In the opener on Wednesday,S&T held a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth but gave up four in the inning to tie the game before falling
6-5 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.
The Lions (9-21) jumped on top scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first. S&T tied the game in the fourth.
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) led off the inning with a walk.
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came in to run for her and advanced to second on
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic)'s sacrifice bunt. The throw to second was late allowing Glenn to reach first safely.
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) advanced the runners with a sacrifice to the shortstop.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) hit a shot up the middle which was snared by the shortstop. The shortstop fired home but Moore beat the play for the tying run.
The Lady Miners took the lead scoring four times in the fifth.
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) led off and singled past a drawn in third baseman and then stole second. She came around to score on
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf)'s single to center. She advanced to second when the center fielder misplayed the ball. Smith drew her third walk of the afternoon to put two on with one out. Glenn then drove home Michaelis with a single to make it 3-1. Runyan kept the rally going with another single scoring Smith from second and advanced Glenn to third. A wild pitch allowed Glenn to score the fourth run of the inning.
Lindenwood scored four times in the sixth with the big blow being a three-run homer off the bat of pinch hitter Emily Johnson.
S&T had a chance to retake the lead in the seventh with Runyan on first and one out
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) hit a drive to deep right field but Johnson caught it on the track for the second out.
The game remained tied after the bottom of the seventh and for the second straight the international tie breaker rule came into effect.
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) started the inning on second and with one out advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Lady Miners couldn't get the big hit though as Schroeder was left there to end the inning. The Lions scored the game winning run on a single to left center by Kate Keaton.
Michaelis and Runyan had two hits apiece.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) suffered the loss allowing six runs, four earned in 7.0 innings on 10 with a pair of walks and a strikeout.
In the nightcap the Lions scored first in the second getting a two single from Keaton to score Alexandra Newcombe. S&T tied it in the fourth. With two outs
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) singles and went to second on a walk to
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West).
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) singled home Briggs to tie the game.
The game remained tied until the seventh. Michaelis led off with a double over the center fielder's head. Smith was hit in the head on a 3-1 pitch to put two on with no out. Glenn sacrificed the runners up to second and third and Runyan came through hitting a smash to third as Michaelis raced home with the go ahead run.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning to earn the save and reward
Elise Kittrell (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) with her first win of the season. Kittrell went the first six innings allowing the run on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks. S&T had six hits in game two led by Hatlan with two.
The Lady Miners (8-23) are back in action on Saturday taking on Maryville University in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in St. Louis, Mo.
