Lady Miners rally comes up short against Rockhurst

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T  Lady Miners seventh inning rally in game two came up short as it fell to Rockhurst 7-4. The Hawks won the opener 8-2 on Saturday afternoon in Rolla.

Rockhurst (8-17, 6-8 GLVC) broke on top in the first inning of game one as Alex Jacobsen doubled to right center to drive in two runs. S&T got one of those back in the second when Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) drove a 3-2 pitch into the gap in right center with two out to bring in Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook).

Jacobsen struck again in the third hitting a three-run homer to left center and then in the fourth Lizzy Tucker hit a three-run homer to right center to make it 8-1. The Lady Miners scored again in the fifth as Michaelis scored on a wild pitch.

S&T had six hits in the contest with Michaelis and Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) accounting for four of those. Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) suffered the loss allowing all eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 3.2 innings.

In the second game the Hawks again scored twice in the first. They added one more in the second on Sadie Applegate's home run to make it 3-0. Rockhurst scored two more in the fourth and added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to make it 7-0.

The Lady Miners loaded the bases with no one out in the seventh. Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) drove in the first run with an RBI single down the right field line. Glenn drove in the second run on an error by the shortstop. Katie Heidinger (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) worked a bases loaded walk for the third run and Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) drove home the fourth run reaching on a fielder's choice. S&T brought the tying run to the plate but a popout to short ended the contest.

The Lady Miners were outhit in game 2 12-5. Smith had two hits while Kasilda Miller (Bourbon, Mo./), Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) and Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) had one each. Elise Kittrell (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) took the loss allowing five runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings of work. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

S&T (6-19, 5-9 GLVC) returns to action on Sunday afternoon hosting William Jewell in a doubleheader at the S&T Softball Field.
