S&T drops pair at Illinois Springfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Springfield, Ill.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball nine dropped a doubleheader at Illinois Springfield 5-0 and 6-3 on Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Ill.

S&T (6-15, 5-5 GLVC) was held to three hits in the first game as the Prairie Stars (9-9, 4-4 GLVC) scored single runs in the first and third innings before breaking it open in the sixth with three runs. Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) had two hits in the contest while Lindsey DeForest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway) added the third one. Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) suffered the defeat allowing five runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in six innings of work.

In the nightcap UIS scored two in the first and added two more in the fourth to make it 4-0. The Lady Miners scored three times in the fifth to close within 4-3. With one out Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) hit her first collegiate home run. Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) followed that up with a walk and came around to score on Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)'s two run homer. The Prairie Stars responded with two more in the home half of the fifth for the final margin.

S&T had four hits in the second game with Lawson, Smith, Schroeder and DeForest having one apiece. Elise Kittrell (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) took the defeat allowing four runs on three hits while striking out four and walking three in 3.2 innings. Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

The Lady Miners are back in action on Sunday afternoon at Quincy beginning at 12 p.m.
