3/11/2012 4:17:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Owensboro, Ky.) - Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)'s two-run home run with one out in the sixth lifted the Missouri S&T Lady Miners to a 2-1 win over Kentucky Wesleyan in the first game of its doubleheader on Sunday in Owensboro, Ky. The Panthers scored a first inning run in game two and it stood up as the lone run as the Lady Miners fell 1-0 in the nightcap.

The opener of the doubleheader was scoreless through the first four frames until KWC (5-11, 4-4 GLVC) broke through in the home half of the fifth. Ashley Crooke led off with a double to left center then moved to third on Kayla Meny's sacrifice bunt to Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West). Kyli Smithson grounded out to short for the second out then Katy Kruse singled to right center to bring in Crooke.

S&T (6-13, 5-3 GLVC) answered in the sixth. With one out Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) singled and came around to score on Smith's blast to center. The Lady Miners had a chance to extend their lead in the top of the seventh. Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) led off with a double and Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came on to run for her. Moore moved to third on Lybargers ground out to short. S&T couldn't add to the lead though as a strikeout and a groundout to short ended the threat.

The Panthers threatened in the bottom of the seventh. With one out Crooke singled through the left side of the infield. She advanced to second as Meny grounded one back to Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South). Keal went to second but Schroeder couldn't hang onto the throw to get the second out. Smithson advanced the runners to second and third with a groundout to Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic). Keal was able to get out of the jam getting Kruse to groundout to Schroeder to end the game.

S&T had four hits in the contest with four different players recording a hit. Keal pitched a complete game allowing the one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.

In the second game the Panthers broke on top early. After the first two were retired Traci Sanders doubled to right center and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. A walk to Meagan Sallee put runners on the corner for Crooke who doubled to right center scoring Sanders.

The Lady Miners had their opportunities to break through but left runners on base in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. In all four of those innings they had the tying run in scoring position but couldn't get the big hit.

S&T came close though in the fifth. With two outs Schroeder doubled to left center and Smith nearly hit her second two run homer of the day but the ball was caught just shy of the fence. In the sixth Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) pinch hit with two outs and just missed a home run down the right field line as it hooked past the foul pole on the wrong side. She would end up grounding out to second.

The Lady Miners had five hits in game two with five different players recording one. Keal suffered the tough luck loss allowing a run on four hits in five innings of work. She walked two and struck out one.

S&T returns to action next weekend traveling to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
