Errors prove costly as Eagles sweep Lady Miners

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Evansville, Ind.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners committed eight errors allowing 16 unearned runs to score as it was swept at Southern Indiana 13-0 in five innings and 7-6 on Saturday in Evansville, Ind. S&T had a chance in the night cap with the go ahead run at second and two outs but couldn't score the runs.

In the opener on Saturday the Screaming Eagles (11-5, 4-0 GLVC) sent 17 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first taking advantage of three Lady Miner errors. They scored 11 times, all unearned, on nine hits. USI added two more unearned runs in the second.

S&T (5-12, 4-2 GLVC) was held to just one hit a one out single by Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) in the second. Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) took the loss allowing eight hits in 0.2 inning with a pair of walks.

In the second game the Screaming Eagles got a run in the first to break on top. The Lady Miners tied it in the second as Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) drove in Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) with a sacrifice fly to right. S&T took the lead in the third as Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) hit a two-run homer to center for its first lead of the afternoon.

USI responded with four in the home half of the the third to make it 5-3. The Lady Miners got one of those back in the fourth. With runners at second and third Premer delivered a pinch hit RBI single to drive in Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove). The Screaming Eagles scored two more in the sixth extending its lead to 7-4.

S&T loaded the bases to start the seventh. Smith drove in her third run of the game with a single to center. Strope made it 7-6 with a groundout to short as the tying and go-ahead runs advanced to second and third. Runyan worked a 2-2 count but struck out swinging to end the game.

The Lady Miners outhit USI 11-10 in game two led by Smith and Runyan with three hits apiece. Strope took the loss falling to 2-3 on the season allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits. She struck out one and walked two in 2.2.

S&T returns to action on Sunday afternoon traveling to Owensboro, Ky., to take on Kentucky Wesleyan beginning at 12 p.m.
