Box Score 2 (Bentonville, Ark.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball squad came up short in both of its games on Sunday on the final day of the Five States Classic. S&T fell to Oklahoma Panhandle State
9-7 in the morning contest then fell to North Alabama
9-3 in nine innings in the afternoon affair.
In the first game on Sunday, the Lady Miners fell behind 1-0 three batters into the game when Brandi Heath hit a solo home run to left center to put the Aggies (9-8) on top.
S&T answered in the home half of the first.
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) led off with a single then came around to score on
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)'s two-run homer to center field. For Smith it was her first roundtripper of the season. The Lady Miners added to their lead in the second inning.
Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) led off and doubled to left center and then
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) reached on an error by the third baseman.
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) sacrificed the runners over to second and third, then
Lindsey DeForest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway) groundout to second bringing home Premer.
Panhandle tied the game in the third, then took the lead with a three run fifth inning. S&T got two of those runs back in the home half of the fifth, but the Aggies struck for three more in the sixth.The Lady Miners struck for two in the seventh and had the winning run at the plate but
Hannah Jokisch (De Soto, Kan./De Soto) flied out to center to end the contest.
S&T had eight hits in the contest by eight different players. Smith had a pair of walks to along with her two RBIs.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) suffered the loss tossing the first 4.1 innings allowing six runs, four earned, wihile striking out a pair and walking two.
In the second game of the day the Lady Miners fell behind North Alabama (8-4) giving up a run in the top of the third. The Lions scored again in the fifth to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth S&T got a double from
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) and a walk to Premer to start the inning. An illegal pitch moved both runners up a base. Smith came on to pinch hit for
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) and worked a walk to load the bases.
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) came off the bench to hit for
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) and singled to center field to drive in Schroeder cutting the lead in half. With the bases still loaded and one out
Abby Lunn (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West ) pinch hit for Rizzo and ground into a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ), running for Premer, was thrown out at home on the play.
Katie Heidinger (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) pinch hit for DeForest and struck out swinging to end the threat.
North Alabama scored again in the sixth to regain the two run advanatage. The Lady Miners tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) pinch hit for
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) and led off the inning with a walk.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) reached on an error by the second baseman allowing Kruse to advance to second.
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) came on to pinch run for Strope. She and Kruse then advanced to second and third when Schroeder drew a walk to load the bases. Premer drove home Kruse with a sacrifice fly to center and on the play Lawson was thrown out in a rundown trying to advance to third. Schroeder advanced to second on the play and then went to third on a wild pitch. She scored on Smith's single tying the game at 3-3.
In the seventh inning the Lions got a lead-off single from Dani Colwill. Kathryn Young flew out to left for the first out, then Lindsay Bobrowski doubled to left field over Rizzo's head. Colwill tried to score on the play but she was gunned down at the plate on a perfect relay throw from Rizzo to Schroeder to Smith for the second out. With the go ahead run at third Summer Wilkerson struck out to end the inning.
UNA had another opportunity to win the game in the eighth inning. Due to the international tie-breaker rule, Wilkerson started the inning at second. She moved to third on single by Julie Mercer. Shelby Goodman lined out to Hatlan in right for the first out. Callie Steadman then flew out to Michaelis. Wilkerson tried to score on the play but Michaelis gunned her down at the plate to end the inning.
S&T threatened in the home half of the eighth as DeForest started the inning on second. Lybarger popped up to the catcher and Strope struck out swinging. Schroeder drew a walk and Premer reached on a fielding error by the shortstop loading the bases up for Smith. Smith flew out to center to end the inning.
In the ninth the Lions scored six times to break open the game. Steadman started the inning on second. She moved to third on a ground out to first and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3. Meaghan Gray walked, then Colwill reached on a fielder's choice to third with Gray out at second on the play. Young then doubled home Colwill to make it 5-3. Duncan came on to relieve Strope and allowed a wild pitch and back-to-back walks before surrending a grand slam to left center to Mercer.
The Lady Miners got two runners on in the bottom of the inning but left them both stranded.
S&T was outhit 14-4 in the second game. Strope, Schroeder, Premer and Glenn had the hits.
Strope made her first start of the season for the Lady Miners. She threw 8.1 innings allowing six runs, five earned, while walking five and striking out three.
S&T falls to 0-9 on the season and will open its 2012 home schedule on Saturday taking on Lewis University in a doubleheader to open GLVC play beginning at 12 p.m.
