Box Score 2 (Bentonville, Ark.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were held to just two hits in its loss on Saturday morning to 19th ranked Missouri Western
3-0 at Memorial Park in Bentonville, Ark., at the Five States Classic. In its second game S&T had leads of 2-0 and 4-3 but couldn't protect them as it fell to Arkansas-Monticello
8-4 at Bentonville High School.
S&T (0-6) threatened in the first getting a one-out double off the left field fence from
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood). She moved to third on a groundout to first off the bat of
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs).
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) then drew a two-out walk putting runners at the corner. The Lady Miners couldn't score though as
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) struck out to end the inning.
The Griffons (11-3) took the lead in the home half of the second. With one out Taylor Anding singled deep into the hole at short and then Leah Steele hit a two-run homer on a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left center.
MWSU scored again in the third getting three straight hits after the first two were retired as Anding singled up the middle to bring home the runner from second.
S&T threatened in the sixth loading the bases with one out but strikeouts by
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) and
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) ended the threat.
During one stretch the Griffons Annalee Rubio retired 13 straight Lady Miners. She tossed a complete game allowing just the two hits while striking out eight and walking three.
Elise Kittrell (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) pitched well in her first start with S&T allowing three runs, all earned, on nine hits. She struck out two and walked one while getting 11 ground ball outs.
Schroeder and
Lindsey DeForest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway) had the two hits for the Lady Miners.
S&T got off to a great start in the second game as
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) led off a single and came around to score on Schroeder's double into the left center field gap. Smith made it 2-0 on the next pitch lining a double into the right center cap to score Schroeder.
UAM (8-4) got one of those back in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Jennifer Hickman.
After a scoreless second the Cotton Blossoms took the lead in the third on a two-run double off the bat of Taylor Russell.
The Lady Miners regained the lead in the fourth as DeForest tripled into the right center field gap scoring
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) and
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) to make it 4-3.
UAM tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a throwing error by
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia).
The game remained tied until the sixth when the Cotton Blossoms scored four runs to break the game open.
S&T finished with nine hits in the contest led by Schroeder with two. Keal suffered the loss allowing eight runs, seven earned, allowing nine hits while walking two and striking out two.
The Lady Miners concludes play in the Five States Classic on Sunday morning against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 9 a.m. and against North Alabama at 11 a.m.
