Box Score 2 (Arkadelphia, Ark.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Ouachita Baptist to open its 2012 season on Saturday. S&T held a 3-2 lead in the opener heading into the bottom of the sixth but gave up five runs in the frame to fall
7-3. In the second game the Lady Miners gave up a seven spot in the second inning in a
13-2 defeat in five innings.
OBU (4-2) scored twice in the first inning of game one on a two-out two-run homer off the bat of Bailey Sanders.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) kept the Tigers off the board over the next four innings giving her offense a chance to come back in the game.
S&T (0-2) got one of those back in the fifth as
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) hit a solo home run with one out in the inning to cut the lead in half. In the sixth the Lady Miners used a two-out rally to take the lead.
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) started it with a single and advanced to second on
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood)'s single.
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) singled home Hatlan as Schroeder advanced to third.
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) then singled home Schroeder.
S&T had a chance at another put Glenn was thrown out at the plate by the left fielder to end the inning.
Ouachita Baptist answered with five in the bottom of the frame.
Elise Kittrell (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) came on to replace Keal to start the inning and loaded the bases with no outs. Strope then came in to replace her. She got the first out getting a ball back to her getting the force play at the plate. Parrish Reed tied the game with a single to right. Alexis Johns then put the Tigers ahead with a bases clearing double to left. A passed ball allowed Johns to move to third and she scored on Megan Askew's single to left.
The Lady Miners threatened in the seventh putting two on with one out but couldn't score.
Seven different players had a hit for S&T in the contest. Keal pitched the first five innings allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Kittrell took the loss allowing three runs on two hits while Strope allowed two runs on three hits.
In the second game the Tigers scored two runs each in the first, third and fourth innings in addition to their seven run second.
The Lady Miners scored twice in the fifth as
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) delivered a two run single.
Runyan had two of S&T's four hits in the contest.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) suffered the loss allowing six runs on five hits in 1.1 innings with four walks and a strikeout.
The Lady Miners return to action on Sunday morning in Arkadelphia against Henderson State (Ark.) at 9 a.m. and Delta State at 11 a.m.
