Miners to tip off 2012-13 basketball season with visit from Hornets

11/8/2012 1:29:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Following a thrilling comeback to win an exhibition game at Western Illinois on Monday, Missouri S&T's men's basketball team will get the regular season underway Saturday night by hosting an old foe from its days in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The Miners will take on Emporia State in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building in the first of two meetings with the Hornets this season.   Both teams are looking to improve from a year ago, as the Miners finished 7-20 last season while ESU finished its year with a mark of 9-18.

While Emporia State dropped all three of its exhibition games – losses to Tulsa, Kansas and Kansas State – the Miners rallied from a 19-point deficit in the second half to upend Western Illinois 61-60 Monday evening.  Mudi Eruteya, one of three newcomers in the S&T starting lineup, hit a three-pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining to give the Miners the victory.

Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) led four Miners in double figures with 14 points at WIU.

Emporia State lost the last of its pre-season contests Sunday by an 81-51 count to Kansas State as Kaleb Wright, a transfer from Mineral Area College, was the only Hornet in double figures with 11 points.  ESU shot below 40 percent from the field in all three of its exhibition games.

Missouri S&T and Emporia State will also face off in Emporia, Kan., on Nov. 20.
