Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team had a chance to clinch a share of the GLVC's West Division crown with a win at Rockhurst on Friday night. Instead the Miners saw their two match lead drop to just a game as they were swept by the Hawks
3-0 (22-25, 19-25, 15-25) in Kansas City, Mo.
S&T (16-12, 12-3 GLVC) trailed 15-8 in the opening set, but scored four straight to get within 15-12 and force Rockhurst (22-6, 11-4 GLVC) to call a timeout. The Hawks extended the lead to 18-12, but once again the Miners ran off four straight points to get with 18-16 on a kill by
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West). Rockhurst scored three of the next four points to again gain a four point edge at 21-17. S&T continued to fight getting to within 21-19 on a kill from
Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township). The Hawks again extended their lead to four points at 23-19, but the Miners closed back to within two, but couldn't get over the hump as Rockhurst hung onto win the first set 25-22.
The Hawks got out to a big lead in set two leading 16-9 halfway through. S&T would eventually get to within 19-16 on an attack error by Alyssa Arnold. Rockhurst though would score the next three points to push the lead to 22-16. The Miners didn't get closer than five points the rest of the stanza as the Hawks would win 25-19 to take the 2-0 lead.
In the final set, S&T held a 2-1 lead early only to see Rockhurst go on a 9-2 run to take a 10-4 lead. The Miners scored four straight points to get within 10-8. Kosmopolis had two kills in the run while
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) added one. The Hawks responded with a 9-1 run to take their largest lead of the match at 19-9. S&T closed to within eight points but were unable to dig out of the hole as it fell 25-15.
The Miners recorded 37 kills in 141 swings but committed 24 errors to finish the match hitting .092 percent. Haslag led the way with 11 kills while Kosmopolis had 10.
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 36 assists while
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 23 digs.
Rockhurst finished with 42 kills in 126 chances while committing just 12 errors and finished the match hitting .238 percent. Emily Ready had 12 kills to pace the Hawks while Katie Loescher finished with eight kills. Whitney Kostal had 34 assists and Victoria Mahl had 21 digs.
S&T concludes its three match road trip on Saturday visiting Liberty, Mo., for a match-up with William Jewell beginning at 3 p.m.
