Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team won its second straight GLVC West Division title with a convincing
3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-22) sweep of Quincy on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T finished with a home record of 13-1 which is the best home season in the program's history.
S&T (19-12, 15-3 GLVC) started out fast scoring the first four points of the match and wouldn't look back. Quincy (14-16, 7-11 GLVC) got as close as two points at 7-5, but the Miners were able to hold them at arm's length. S&T eventually pulled away with a 7-1 run to extend a 16-13 lead to 23-14 on a kill by
Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township). The Miners won the set taking advantage of back-to-back Hawk errors to win 25-15. S&T hit .243 percent in the stanza and had 14 kills.
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) combined for nine of those kills. Quincy was held to a zero hitting percentage and had nine kills.
S&T raced out to a 4-2 lead early in set three, but the Hawks eventually caught up and tied it at 7-all. The Miners responded scoring four of the next five points to move back in front at 11-8. Quincy scored back-to-back points to close to within 11-10, but S&T fired back scoring 10 of the next 12 points to take a commanding 21-12 lead. The Miners took the second set on a service error by Damaris Linker to win 25-16. S&T hit .220 percent in the frame and had 15 kills led by Meyer's six and
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West)'s three. The Hawks hit just .027 percent and had eight kills.
The third set was the tightest of the three featuring seven ties and two lead changes as it was a back and forth affair for a majority of the set. The Miners led 9-5, but Quincy came back to tie it at 11-all. The two sides traded points over the next 10 swings and were still tied at 16 after a kill by Brittany Houghton. S&T regained the lead on a kill from Wright which sparked a 4-1 run and gave them a 20-17 lead. The Hawks refused to go quietly cutting the lead to 23-22, but the Miners got a kill from Meyer and won it off an error by Christine Williams.
S&T finished the match hitting .227 percent and was led by Meyer's 14 kills. Haslag contributed nine to the attack while Wright chipped in with eight.
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 32 assists while
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 16 digs.
Quincy finished the contest hitting .063 percent and 30 kills. The Hawks were led by Briann Joslin with eight kills. Lyndsay Kooi had 14 assists while Linker had 12 digs.
S&T will play in the first round of the GLVC Tournament at 1:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday at the Indiana South Sports Academy in Indianapolis, Ind. The pairings will be announced on Sunday night.
