Box Score (Louisville, Ky.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners chance at an upset came up short in its
1-0 loss at Bellarmine on Sunday. The Lady Miners (5-7, 3-7 GLVC) gave it all they had but couldn't sneak one past the Knights (9-2, 7-2 GLVC) keeper.
Bellarmine dominated the opening 45 minutes outshooting S&T 7-1.
Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) made a trio of saves in the period to keep it scoreless until just before the end of the half. The Knights scored with 0:30 left in the frame when Allyson Palmer scored on a shot inside the far post from Chelsea McCarty.
Bellarmine tried to extend its lead early in the second half but Deister again came up big with a pair of saves in the opening couple of minutes. S&T took a flurry of shots as
Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) had three blocked and
Colleen Lewis (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall Academy) had one saved during a five minute stretch.
The Knights continued looking for that second goal but kept getting denied by the Lady Miner defense. S&T turned up the pressure on the offensive end in the final 15 minutes getting seven shots off, three of which were on goal but couldn't find the back of the net.
Bellarmine finished the game outshooting the Lady Miners 16-12 for the contest, but S&T had the edge in the second half 11-9. Ekholm took five shots, one on goal while
Kirstin Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ) had two shots apiece. Both of Kurilla's were on goal. Deister finished with seven saves.
The Lady Miners are back at home on Friday evening when they host Kentucky Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
