Miners swept at Drury

Box Score (Springfield, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miners were swept at Drury 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 25-27) on Tuesday evening in Springfield, Mo. The Miners had its five match winning streak against the Panthers snapped with the defeat.

Drury (14-15, 6-8 GLVC) got out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set before S&T (16-11, 12-2 GLVC) scored three straight to tie the set at 5-5. The Panthers retook a 9-6 lead only to see the Miners rally back with four straight to take its first lead of the set at 10-9 on a kill by Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) at 10-9. Drury answered with an 8-2 run to take a 17-12 advantage. Sara Borneman had a pair of kills in the run. S&T got back to within 18-16 on a service ace from Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia), but wouldn't get any closer as the Panthers would go onto win 25-22. The Miners had 12 kills in the set and hit .184 percent. Drury on the other hand hit .191 percent and had 15 kills.

In the second set, the Miners held a 15-9 lead only to watch the Panthers go on a 10-1 run to take a 19-16 advantage. Drury led 22-20, but S&T got a kill from Haslag and an error by the Panthers to tie it up at 22-all. A service error by Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) gave Drury a 23-22 lead. Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) recorded one of her 10 kills to tie it back up at 23, but the Miners gave up the next two points to fall 25-23 and fall into the 0-2 hole. S&T hit .222 percent in the second set and held Drury to .088 hitting percentage.

In set three the Panthers raced out to a 4-0 lead only to see the Miners rally to tie the set at 5-5 on a kill by Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa). Drury then went on a 9-3 run to build a 14-8 lead. S&T began to climb its way back into the match eventually getting to 22-21 on an ace from DeMotte. The Panthers scored two of the next three points to set up match point at 24-22. The Miners got back-to-back points and tied it at 24-all on a kill from Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ). After a Drury timeout it regained the lead on a kill from Alex Smith. Smith committed an error on the next swing allowing S&T to tie it back up at 25-25. Smith though recorded back-to-back kills to end the set 27-25 and give the match to the Panthers.

S&T hit .202 percent for the match and had 40 kills. It was led by Wright's 10 kills. Haslag added nine more. Costello had 32 set assists while DeMotte had 15 digs.

Drury finished the match hitting .189 percent and had 41 kills led by Smith's 17. Borneman added 12 more. Alexis Dutt had 34 assists while Brooke Foster had 19 digs.

The Miners return to action on Friday night when they travel to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst beginning at 7 p.m.
