S&T shakes off slow start to sweep Maryville

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team got off to a slow start, but eventually warmed up to sweep past the Maryville Saints 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-20) on Friday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The Miners finished the match with 48 kills and were led by Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) with 13.

The two teams traded points for the first part of the opening set and were tied 10-10. S&T (15-10, 11-1 GLVC) broke the set open with a 7-1 run behind a pair of kills from Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township). Haslag and Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) added a kill each in the run as well. The Miners stretched their lead to 20-12 before the Saints (4-21, 2-10 GLVC) ran off six straight to get within 20-18 on a kill from Julia Greaves. S&T responded emphatically scoring the final seven points to win 25-18.

The Miners finished the opening set with 16 kills and hit .222 percent. Haslag and Kosmopolis combined for 10 of those kills.

The second set was all S&T as it scored the first five and nine of the first 10 points to race out of the gates strong. The Miners lead eventually grew to 15-3, before Maryville closed to within 20-10. That would be the closest it got as the Miners finished strong to win 25-13.

S&T hit .351 percent for the set and had 16 kills against three errors in 37 swings. Meyer led the way with five kills.

The final set saw seven ties and five lead changes. The Miners trailed 17-15, before going on a 10-3 run to end the set 25-20 and win the match. S&T hit .250 percent and again had 16 kills. Haslag had six kills in the stanza while Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) added four more.

The Miners finished the match hitting .269 percent. Meyer and Kosmopolis contributed eight kills apiece to compliment Haslag. Zellmer finished with five. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 29 assists while Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) led the way with 15 digs.

The Saints finished the contest with 29 kills and hit .097 percent. Mikaela Lahm led the way with eight kills. Taryn Trubich had 15 assists while Jamie Kloss had 21 digs.

S&T is back at home on Saturday when it plays host to Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 5 p.m.
