Miners close home football schedule with visit from Urbana

10/24/2012 4:56:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – For the final time in the 2012 season, Missouri S&T's football team will take the field at Allgood-Bailey Stadium and hope to leave it with a win total that hasn't been reached since 1983 as it plays host to Urbana University on Saturday.  Kickoff will be at 1 p.m., with the Miner seniors scheduled to be honored at around 12:45 p.m.

The Miners, 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, enter Saturday's contest with a three-game winning streak as does Urbana, who is 6-2 on the year and 4-1 in GLVC play.  The winner will take hold of second place in the conference standings with two weeks to play and S&T has only conference game remaining after the clash with the Blue Knights, which is Nov. 3 at Saint Joseph's.

Missouri S&T routed Quincy 64-6 last week as it held the Hawks to just 132 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers.  The Miners rank among the GLVC and national leaders in several categories, including second in NCAA Division II in quarterback sacks and interceptions, third in turnover margin and ninth in scoring offense with an average of 42.2 points per game.

Urbana, meanwhile, ranks 14th in Division II in total offense at 476.5 yards per game and is scoring better than 35 points a contest, thanks in large part to quarterback D.J. Mendenhall who leads the GLVC in passing at 283.6 yards per game and in total offense with better than 322 yards a contest.

Both teams have a pair of receivers who are having outstanding seasons in Urbana's Joe Webb (10th in the nation in receiving yards at 106 per game) and Nate Wilburn-Ogletree (team-high 51 receptions), facing S&T's duo of Smook Thomas (Quincy, Fla./East Gadsden) (eighth in Division II in receptions) and Joseph Hyman (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades) (12 touchdown catches, the third-highest total in Division II).

The Blue Knights have also been one of the best teams in the country at making plays in the opposing backfield, as they are averaging 8.5 tackles per outing for lost yardage.
