Box Score QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T scored early and often Saturday afternoon, rolling to a
64-6 victory in a penalty-filled Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Flinn Stadium.
The win moves the Miners to 7-1 on the season, marking just the third time in school history that an S&T team has won as many as seven of its first eight games of a season, and to 5-1 in the GLVC. The other occasions in which the Miners were 7-1 or better after eight games came in the undefeated seasons of 1914 and 1980.
The Miners had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by
David Druse (Coal City, Ill./Coal City HS) on their opening drive of the game, but reached the end zone on four of their next five possessions to break the game open. The first came when S&T closed out a 60-yard drive with a six-yard scoring pass from
Josh Firm (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) to
Joseph Hyman (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades) with just over six minutes remaining in the opening period.
After Quincy lost the ball on downs in Miner territory, Firm and Hyman connected again on the first play for a 62-yard scoring pass, as Hyman ran by the secondary right down the middle of the field and went the final 25 yards untouched to give the Miners a 17-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
S&T continued to build on its lead over the remainder of the first half, aided in large degree to a number of penalties against the Hawks. Quincy was flagged for 13 infractions in the opening half alone for more than 100 yards, several of which extended S&T possessions.
The Miners' first touchdown drive of the second quarter was helped along by a defensive holding penalty and ended with Firm throwing a 16-yard scoring pass – on fourth down – to
Scott Hendricks (Kechi, Kan./Maize HS). A fumble forced by
Josip Juric (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling HS) and recovered by
Naeem Forrester (Los Angeles, Calif./Venice) set up Hendricks' second touchdown, a one-yard run, that gave the Miners a 30-0 lead.
Druse kicked a 26-yard field goal in the final minute of the half to give S&T a 33-0 lead at the intermission.
The Miners got a pair of five-yard scoring runs from
Curterris Golden (Chicago, Ill./John Hope) – who led the S&T ground attack with 119 yards on 16 carries – in the third quarter, a 31-yard field goal from Druse in the early stages of the fourth quarter and two touchdown runs later in the period from
Zenel Hudson (Bayshore, N.Y./Milford Academy), covering seven and two yards to close the Miner scoring.
Quincy broke the shutout with 3:37 to play on an 18-yard scoring pass from Ryan Lonergan to Justin Dickens. Prior to the touchdown, the Hawks had only four drives on the afternoon that had gained as many as 10 yards as S&T held Quincy to a total of 132 yards of offense and forced five turnovers.
The Miners got interceptions from
Chris Horn (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington) and
Payton Jimison (Rogers, Ark./Rogers HS) as well as three fumble recoveries in the contest.
S&T finished with a season-high 275 yards on the ground, getting 75 from Hendricks and 55 from Hudson on top of the 119 gained by Golden. Firm completed seven-of-13 passes for 123 yards and the three scores, with
Smook Thomas (Quincy, Fla./East Gadsden) and
Isaiah Culver (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) catching four passes apiece to lead the Miners in that department.
The Miners will close their home slate next Saturday with a showdown against Urbana University (6-2, 4-1 GLVC); the Blue Knights knocked off McKendree 31-23 Saturday. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium and the Miner seniors will be honored prior to the contest next week.
