Miners 14-match win streak snapped by 20th ranked Bulldogs

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team had its 14-match home win streak snapped in a loss to No. 20 Truman State 3-2 (25-19, 13-25, 22-25, 25-16, 6-15) on Tuesday evening in Rolla. S&T (13-9) dropped its fourth straight match overall.

The opening set was a back and forth with each side answering each other swing for swing early on. With the score tied at 5-all, the Miners began to get some separation scoring four straight points. Truman (19-4) eventually closed to within 12-11, but S&T scored four straight to extend its lead to 16-11. The Bulldogs wouldn't get closer than three points the rest of the set as the Miners scored eight of the final 13 points to win 25-19.

The second set was all Truman as they opened on an 8-2 run. S&T would get within 12-8, but the Bulldogs put the set away with six straight points and the Miners wouldn't get closer than nine the rest of the way.

S&T led for a majority of set three and were up 18-12 and appeared to be in control, but Truman went on an 11-1 run to grab a 23-19 lead. The Miners fought back to within 23-22 getting kills from Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township). S&T missed a chance to tie it when the Bulldogs got back-to-back kills from Emily Briseno and Ali Patterson to win 25-22 and take the 2-1 lead.

The Miners led for a majority of the fourth set and eventually built an eight point lead in the set and were able to finish this one off to win 25-16 and force the fifth and deciding set.

Truman raced out to a 5-1 lead to start set five, but S&T closed to within 5-3 on a kill from Torrie Rupe (Wichita, Kan./Collegiate). The Bulldogs answered with four straight points and wouldn't look back as they went on to win the set 15-6.

The Miners hit .171 percent for the match and had 50 kills led by Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) with 14. Meyer added 11 while Kosmopolis finished with eight. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 43 assists while Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 27 digs.

Truman hit .240 percent for the match, had 62 kills and was led by Patterson with 16. Megan Sharpe added 15 more while Allie Brak and Briseno had 12 and 11 respectively. Meghan Zimmerman had 49 assists while Abby Moser finished with 26 digs.

S&T hits the road this weekend heading to Indiana for a pair of cross-divisional GLVC contests beginning with Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 3 p.m.
