Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners fell to Southern Indiana
1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the S&T Soccer Field. S&T was outshot in the contest 12-10, but had the edge in shots on goal 9-7.
Southern Indiana (8-5-1, 7-4-1 GLVC) had the edge in the first 25 minutes getting three shots away but none were on target. The Lady Miners (6-8, 4-8 GLVC) got their first chance in the 32
nd minute on a shot from
Colleen Lewis (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall Academy) from 20 yards out that was saved.
Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) made the first of her six saves in the 36
th minute when she stopped a shot by Shelby Tarantino.
S&T had a great chance to score in the 40
th minute off a corner kick.
Kendra Wood (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) put the ball in the box that was banged around before
Kacey Ludwig (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) settled it and put it just over the top of the goal. The Lady Miners had another chance in the final minute of the half. Wood placed another corner kick in the box to
Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ). Ekholm took a shot that was saved off the line by a Screaming Eagle defender. The ball wasn't cleared out though and Wood had a shot that was saved by Jackie Lohmann.
S&T had the edge in shots 5-4 at the end of the first half and 2-0 in corner kicks.
Southern Indiana started the second half taking seven shots, five of which were on goal. Deister made five saves with the biggest one coming in the 63
rd minute when she stopped Susan Ellsperman on a breakaway.
The Lady Miners had their chances as well but couldn't get one behind Lohmann.
The Screaming Eagles scored the lone goal in the 81
st minute. Madi Velky headed in a cross from Julia Kohnen. S&T almost had the equalizer 0:24 later but Ekholm's shot was stopped by Lohmann.
Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ) had a chance in the 85
th minute but her header attempt was denied by Lohmann as well. Ekholm nearly gave the Lady Miners the tie with 0:20 left. She fired a high shot from the edge of the box that Lohmann made a leaping save over her head to prevent the ball from going in.
USI outshot S&T 8-5 in the second half as both sides had five shots on goal. The Lady Miners took four corner kicks in the period.
Ekholm took four shots, all on goal. Fitzpatrick, Minea, Salzman, Wood and Lewis had one shot on goal apiece.
S&T is back on the road on Friday night when it travels to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell beginning at 5 p.m.
