S&T drops finale to Hillsdale 3-1 at GLVC/GLIAC Crossover

Box Score (Aurora, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad had a rough weekend in Aurora, Ill., at the Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover as it dropped its final match to Hillsdale 3-1 (25-17, 15-25, 23-25, 20-25) on Saturday at the Great Lakes Center.

The Miners (13-8) fell behind in the opening set 3-1, but quickly turned it around using a 9-1 run to grab a 10-4 lead. Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) served seven straight points in the run. S&T led by as many as 13 points in the frame before Hillsdale (11-9) closed to within seven at 24-17. Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) recorded a kill to end the set at 25-17.

The Chargers scored the first five points of set two only to see S&T get within 10-8. Hillsdale quickly pushed the lead back out though scoring seven of the next nine points to take a commanding 17-10 lead. The Miners wouldn't get closer than five points the rest of the way as the Chargers won 25-15.

Hillsdale raced out to a 6-0 lead in set three, but S&T eventually got up at 12-12 on a kill from Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West). The rest of the set was a barnburner as each side answered the other point for point. It was tied at 23-all when the Chargers got back-to-back kills from Kat Carpenter and Lauren K. Grover to win the set 25-23.

The fourth set was a continuation of the third as it was tightly contested. Hillsdale led 19-16 in the frame, but the Miners eventually got to within 20-19. The Chargers though scored five of the last six points to win 25-20.

S&T hit .130 percent for the match and was led by Wright with 14 kills and Kosmopolis added 12 more. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 43 assists and had 11 digs. Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 13 digs as well.

Hillsdale hit .218 percent for the contest and was led by Caitlin Kopmeyer and Emily Wolfert with 14 kills apiece. Sydney Lenhart had 26 assists while Bailey Linder had 22 digs.

The Miners are back at home on Tuesday night when they host Truman State at 7 p.m.
