S&T falls to eighth ranked Central Missouri 3-1

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners took the first set against eighth ranked Central Missouri, couldn't overcome the play of the Jennies Paula Harris and Allie Huffman as the Jens won the next three to take the match 3-1 (25-21, 15-25, 14-25, 21-25) on Tuesday evening in Rolla. The duo accounted for 40 of UCM's 63 kills.

S&T (2-3) dominated the opening set as it built a 22-10 lead. At one point in the frame the Lady Miners were hitting 66.7 percent. UCM (3-2) battled back to within 24-21 before Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) ended it with her fifth kill of the set. Melanie Shehorn (Flora, Ill./Flora) had four more while Spears and Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) had three apiece.

S&T finished the frame hitting 27.5 percent with 17 kills in 40 chances. Harris led the Jennies with seven kills.

Central Missouri hit nearly 45 percent in taking the second set to square the match at 1-1. Huffman had five kills while Harris added four and three others had three apiece. S&T was led by Zellmer with four.

The third set was controlled by the Jens as well as Harris had eight kills in nine chances hitting nearly 90 percent. As a team UCM hit 30.2 percent with 15 kills while S&T had 10 kills but committed seven errors. Bekebrede and Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) had three kills apiece.

The fourth set was very tightly contested with four ties and a lead change. The Jens built a five point lead late only to see S&T cut the deficit to three before UCM was able to win the match. The Jens were led by Huffman with six kills and Harris with four. Spears had four kills to lead the Lady Miners with Wright chipping in with three.

The Jennies finished the match hitting just over 30 percent and had seven blocks in the contest. Harris had a match-high 23 kills while Huffman added 17 to the attack.

S&T finished the match with 48 kills and were led by Bekebrede with 11 kills, Zellmer had 10 while Spears and Wright had nine and eight respectively.

The Lady Miners return to action on Friday night as they open conference play against Illinois-Springfield starting at 7 p.m.
