(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners extended its school record winning streak to eight straight defeating Missouri-St. Louis 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. With the win S&T (10-3, 7-0 GLVC) remains the only unbeaten team in conference play and now has a two game lead in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division.
Missouri-St. Louis (8-4, 5-2 GLVC) scored five of the first seven points to take an early lead. S&T battled back to tie it at 7-7 before the Tritons scored the next two points regaining a 9-7 advantage. A kill by Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) sparked a 7-0 run for the Lady Miners giving them a 14-9 advantage. It was a lead they wouldn't relinquish stretching it to 24-13. The Tritons scored three straight but a service error by Erin Higgins gave the opener to S&T 25-16.
Wright and Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) combined for 10 kills in the stanza as the Lady Miners hit 38.7 percent while holding UMSL to a hitting percentage of 23 percent.
S&T appeared to be cruising to another win in the second set leading 22-14, but the Tritons went on a 10-2 run to tie the set at 24-all. Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) recorded back-to-back kills for the Lady Miners giving them a 26-24 set win.
Zellmer, Bekebrede and Melanie Shehorn (Flora, Ill./Flora) each had four kills in the frame as S&T finished with 17 kills and limited the UMSL offense to just an 11.1 hitting percentage.
The Lady Miners took an early lead in the third set before the Tritons responded to tie the game. The set was going back-and-forth until the midway point when S&T scored three straight to take an 18-14 lead. UMSL got within 19-18 but the Lady Miners pushed the lead back to four on an assisted block from Zellmer and Wright.
The Tritons got back within 24-22 but no closer as Bekebrede recorded a kill on a block error by Higgins for the 25-22 win.
S&T finished the match with 47 kills and hit 20.3 percent. Zellmer had 13 kills while Wright chipped in with 10. Shehorn added nine and Bekebrede had eight. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had 36 assists and Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) dug 21 balls.
The Tritons finished the match hitting just 12.4 percent and had 28 kills led by Higgins with 11. Chelsea Burkle added eight more. Anna McNulty had 25 assists while Alisha Skaggs dug up 19 balls.
The Lady Miners will be back at home on Wednesday evening for a doubleheader. S&T will play McKendree at 5:30 p.m., followed by a match with Southwest Baptist at 7:30 p.m.
