S&T extends winning streak to six defeating William Jewell and Pittsburg State

(Liberty, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners extended its school record winning streak to six matches defeating William Jewell 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) and Pittsburg State 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon at William Jewell College. The Lady Miners and Northern Kentucky are the lone unbeaten teams in GLVC play.

S&T (8-3, 5-0 GLVC) had 43 kills in the opening match and hit 30.4 percent. Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) led the way with 11 kills. Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) dropped in nine while Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center) and Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) had seven apiece. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 36 assists and Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 14 digs.

The Lady Miners held the Cardinals (6-4, 2-3 GLVC) to a hitting percentage of 11 percent and forced them into 15 errors.  Hannah Herndon led WJC with nine kills on the afternoon.

In the match against Pittsburg State, S&T overcame some early offensive struggles to win the first set 25-21. The Lady Miners hit 28 percent in the frame while the Gorillas (2-9) were slightly better at 32.3 percent.

In the second set S&T trailed 20-14 before scoring seven of the next eight points squaring the set at 21-21. The Lady Miners rallied to take the lead and had a chance at the commanding 2-0 lead but Katie McDonald (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) missed on an attack tying the set. Pitt State took three of the final four points to win 27-25.

S&T trailed 6-0 to begin the third set before rallying to tie the set midway through. It built a 21-18 lead on a kill by Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) and hung on as Bekebrede and Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) recorded kills to end the set giving the Lady Miners a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was back and forth for a majority of the set until S&T began to gain some distance late in the frame. The Gorillas continue to hang around closing to 23-22. An attack error by Lauren Brentlinger set up match point for the Lady Miners.

Morgan Voorhes recorded a kill to make it 24-23 but S&T ended the match on the next play as Spears and Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) stuffed Voorhes at the net for the 25-23 win.

The Lady Miners finished the match with 68 kills led by a career-high 25 by Bekebrede. Mueller had 11 while Zellmer finished with 10. Costello dished out 57 assists and Jennifer Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) had 27 digs.

As a team S&T hit 21.2 percent while limiting the Gorillas to just 19 percent.

The Lady Miners will be back in action next Friday night hosting Maryville University at 7 p.m.
