Late goal downs Lady Miners

(Evansville, Ind.) – Southern Indiana scored with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation handing the Missouri S&T Lady Miners a 1-0 defeat at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Ind., on Friday evening.

The first half was played to a scoreless draw though both sides had some opportunities. Southern Indiana (2-3-1, 2-1 GLVC) outshot S&T (1-2-1, 1-2 GLVC) 6-4 but the Lady Miners had more on goal with three on frame compared to just two for the Screaming Eagles.

S&T also had five corner kicks in the frame against three for USI. Both sides were whistled for four infractions while the Screaming Eagles were flagged for offsides three times.

Southern Indiana scored the game's lone goal with 10 minutes left off a corner kick. Megan Kempf sent one into the box and Susan Ellspearman knocked it past Stacey Luquette (St. Amant, La./St. Amant ).

Leah Williams (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) tried to tie the game nearly two minutes later but her shot was turned away.

The Screaming Eagles outshot the Lady Miners by a 13-6 margin in the second half putting four on goal against just two for the Lady Miners. USI was whistled for nine fouls in the stanza against two for S&T.

Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) led S&T with four shots, including two on goal. Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) had a pair of shots as well. Luquette stopped five shots for the Lady Miners.

Ellspearman led the Screaming Eagles with seven shots. Makenzie Brinker had four shots while Kempf and Julia Kohnen had three each. Stephanie Bodamer made five saves.

S&T returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Owensboro, Ky., to take on Kentucky Wesleyan starting at 2:30 p.m.
