EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team moved above the .500 mark for the first time in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday night, getting a goal in each half from
Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College ) and a shutout performance in goal from
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) to record a
2-0 win over Southern Indiana.
The Miners, who improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC with the win, took the lead at the 25:13 mark when Schraier netted his first goal of the season off an assist from
Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ). S&T continued to keep the pressure on the Screaming Eagles (1-4, 0-3 GLVC) as it held an 8-1 advantage in shots in the opening half, but took that 1-0 lead to the intermission.
USI had some opportunities early in the half to get the equalizer, but the Miner defense blocked four shots attempts in the first 18 minutes and McNamee turned away attempts by Austin Andrekus and Jeffrey McClure moments later.
Schraier gave the Miners some breathing room when he scored at the 83:18 mark from
Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon).
S&T finished with a 12-9 edge in shots and had five corner kicks to two for USI. McNamee was credited with two saves – both coming in the second half, as he recorded his 23
rd career shutout to extend his school record and third of the 2011 season.
The Miners, who received consideration in this week's NSCAA Division II rankings after being in the first two weeks of the year, will play at Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday in a noon contest.
