(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners closed out the home portion of its schedule dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Missouri-St. Louis 8-1 and 9-0 in six innings on Thursday night in Rolla.
In the opener the Tritons (25-18, 16-5 GLVC) scored first scoring an unearned run on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Their lead grew to 2-0 in the third inning as JaCee Ellis drove in a runner from third with a sacrifice fly to center.
S&T (12-28, 7-15 GLVC) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) led off with a double to right then scored on Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville)'s single down the left field line. After a groundout Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) ripped a shot off the top of the pitcher's glove putting runners at first and second with one out. The Lady Miners couldn't do any further damage though as a fly out to right and a groundout to short ended the threat.
UMSL scored twice in the fifth then broke the game open in the sixth with three runs. It added its final tally in the seventh with a one out homer to right center.
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) had two of S&T's five hits in the opening game. Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) suffered the loss allowing eight runs, six earned, on 12 hits and walked three.
In the nightcap the Tritons again broke on top with a pair of runs in the second.
The Lady Miners threatened in third putting two on with one out but a strikeout and a ground out to third ending the threat. They threatened again in the fourth getting a lead-off double from Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) but couldn't score her.
Things came undone in the sixth inning as UMSL scored seven runs on five hits and took advantage of an error extending its lead to 9-0.
S&T was retired in order in the bottom of the frame to end the contest.
Drage, Schroeder and Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) each had a hit in the second game for the Lady Miners. Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) suffered the loss allowing two runs on two hits but issued five walks.
S&T closes out its regular season on Saturday when it travels to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Maryville in a conference doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
