(Romeoville, Ill.) – Through the first 11 innings of its doubleheader at Lewis on Saturday the Missouri S&T Lady Miners bats were held in check with just four hits. That all changed in the seventh inning when S&T scored three times on five hits in support of Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South)'s complete game three-hit shutout to win game 2 3-0. The Flyers won the opener 9-0 in five innings.
The Lady Miners (7-19, 3-7 GLVC) had three hits through six innings while the Flyers (14-7, 3-1 GLVC) had just two. Lewis had the best scoring chance in the fourth putting runners at second and third with one out, but Keal got a strikeout and a groundout to Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) to get out of the inning.
S&T had a chance in the sixth when Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) hit a one out double to left center. She got as far as third but was stranded there.
In the seventh the Lady Miners started the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. After a pitching change, Schroeder doubled home the go-ahead runs with a two run double to center field. After a strikeout, Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) singled home an insurance run to make it 3-0.
Lewis had a chance in the seventh getting its lead-off batter on before Keal set down the next three hitters to end the contest.
S&T finished the game with eight hits led by Smith with two. Keal improved to 5-8 striking out four while allowing just one free pass.
In the first game on Saturday the Lady Miners gave up three runs in each of the first three innings. S&T was held hitless until two outs in the fifth when Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) singled through the left side breaking up Diana Pickrum's perfect game. The Lady Miners loaded the bases but couldn't score to extend the game.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) allowed nine runs on 10 hits in two innings. She walked two and struck out one. Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit.
S&T will be back in action on Sunday traveling to Somers, Wis., to take on Wisconsin-Parkside in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
