(Springfield, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners held a four run with two outs in the sixth inning of game one but Drury scored seven straight runs on seven hits to rally for a 10-7 win on Saturday at Thompson Field. The Panthers won the second game 11-3 in six innings.
In the opener the Lady Miners (12-24, 7-11 GLVC) jumped on the board first on a two out infield single off the bat of Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) with the bases loaded scoring Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) from third. S&T had a chance for more but left the bases full.
Drury (21-23, 9-11 GLVC) answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 edge.
After a scoreless second the Lady Miners tied the game in the third on a two-run homer just inside the left field pole off the bat of Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs). S&T took the lead with two runs in the fourth as Deibert and Runyan each had RBI singles.
That lead stood until the sixth when the Lady Miners tacked on two more. With two on and one out Smith delivered a single down the right field line to score Jennifer Sardigal (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville). Then with Runyan batting and runners on the corner Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves), who pinch ran for Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ), and Lindsey DeForest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway), pinch running for Smith, executed a perfect double steal as Rizzo scored to make it 7-3. Runyan and Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) each hit bullets to right field that were caught to end the inning.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) retired eight straight heading into the sixth and set down the first two hitters with ease. Natalie Sago then lined a 2-2 pitch over Keal's head into center field to start the rally. After a pair of singles loaded the bases Andi Anti beat out an infield single to the right side scoring Sago. Kelsey James then delivered a RBI single through the left side to make it 7-5. Ashley Balazs then dropped in just behind the first bag which allowed two runs to score and tie the game.
Brittany Smith hit a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run homer to give Drury the 10-7 advantage.
S&T threatened in the seventh bringing the tying run to the plate with one out and runners at first and second but Sardigal lined into a double play as the left fielder made a sliding catch and doubled off Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) at second to end the game.
The Lady Miners outhit the Panthers 15-12 and were led by Runyan and Sardigal with three apiece. Deibert, Drage, Smith and Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) had two each. Runayn and Smith had three RBIs apiece.
Keal took the loss allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on 12 hits while striking out seven and walking three.
The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Drury sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored eight runs on six hits and took advantage of three walks. The Panthers had four extra base hits in the frame including a two by Kaitlyn Bowles. Bowles led off the inning with a double to center then blasted a three-run shot to center in her second at-bat in the frame.
S&T got one of those back in the fourth as it loaded the bases to start the inning. Smith grounded into a double play to the second baseman which scored Sardigal.
Drury answered back in the bottom of the frame as James doubled home Anti from first extending it back to an eight run deficit.
Schroeder led off the fifth with a long home run to left field to make it 9-2. Rizzo made it 9-3 with a double to center to score Kruse.
The Panthers got one in the fifth then won the game in the sixth on a bases loaded walk with two outs.
Drury outhit S&T 15-4 in the nightcap. Rizzo, Drage, Smith and Schroeder had the hits.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) took the loss allowing eight runs, five earned, on eight hits while walking three in just 2.2 innings of work. Briggs pitched the final three innings giving up three runs on seven hits.
The Lady Miners will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Rockhurst in Kansas City beginning at 12 p.m.
