Lady Miners rally to gain split with Illinois-Springfield

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners rallied with three runs in the final three innings overcoming a 3-1 deficit to win the second game of a doubleheader 4-3 over Illinois-Springfield on Sunday. UIS won the opener 3-1.

In game two the Lady Miners (12-22, 7-9 GLVC) scored first in the second inning. With one out and Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) on first Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) lined out a shot to the gap in right center. The center and right fielders both converged on the ball and collided allowing the ball to drop. Runyan tried to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate. Schroeder got a double and advanced to third on the throw home. She scored on the next play as Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) lined a single to right center.

The Prairie Stars (14-22, 6-10 GLVC) took the lead with three runs in the fourth. They loaded the bases with three singles then Jaylyn Jones brought them all home with a double to left center.

S&T tied it in the bottom of the inning. Runyan led things off with a double to right center then moved to third on Schroeder's bloop single to right center. Kruse brought both runners home ripping a double to right center. The Lady Miners had a chance for more with two outs and runners at second and third but couldn't bring the runners in.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth. With one out Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) delivered a pinch hit double over the left fielder's head. Hatlan then hit a towering pop up that landed in between the pitcher and catcher for an infield single. Jennifer Sardigal (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) drove in the eventual game winning run with a double down the left field line to score Briggs.

S&T again had a chance for more but back-to-back groundouts ended the threat.

Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) retired the Prairie Stars in order in the seventh to pick up her 10th win of the season. Keal allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits to get the complete game victory. Four of those hits came in the fourth. She struck out five while walking one.

The Lady Miners had 11 hits in the second game led by Hatlan with three. Schroeder and Kruse had two hits each.

In the first game on Sunday UIS got a lead-off single by Mandy Smith. She came around to score on Danielle Abbott's double down the left field line. Keal was able to minimize the damage by retiring the next three hitters.

The Prairie Stars added to their lead in the third. A single and an error allowed the first two batters to reach. Keal got Abbott to strike out swinging for the first out. A pickoff attempt turned into a double steal allowing both runners to move up. Rachel Wood drove in the second run with a ground out to second for the second out. The third run scored on a failed pickoff attempt at third as Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)'s throw went into left field.

S&T got one of those runs back in the fourth. Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) led off a single through the right side. Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came onto run for her. After a lineout Smith doubled to left sending Moore to third. Runyan popped out to second for the second out. Schroeder drove a single through the left side to score Moore and put runners on the corner.

Kruse ripped a line drive to short that was caught ending the inning.

The Lady Miners threatened again in the fifth. After the first two were retired Sardigal doubled down the right field line and Deibert drew a walk. A groundout to third though ended the threat.

S&T threatened again in the seventh. With one out Abby Lunn (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West ) hit a pinch hit single back up the middle. Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) came on to run for her and moved to second on Hatlan's single to left. Both runners were stranded as back-to-back fly outs to left ended the game.

The Lady Miners outhit the Prairie Stars 7-5 and were led by Hatlan with two.

Keal went the distance in game one as well allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits. She struck out six and walked one.

S&T will be off until next Saturday when it travels to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury in a GLVC doubleheader at Meador Park beginning at 12 p.m.
