Lady Miners drop two more in Joplin

(Joplin, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners held a 6-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth but couldn't hold it as Northwest Missouri scored seven runs in the last two innings to win 7-6 in Joplin on Sunday. In game two S&T held a 5-0 lead before falling 8-7 to Pittsburg State.

S&T (1-8) scored first in the opening by playing small ball. Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) led off the game with a single then moved to second on a passed ball. She advanced to third on a fly out to right off the bat of Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) and then scored on Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County )'s sacrifice fly to left.

The Lady Miners added to their lead with two more in the second. Jennifer Sardigal (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) drove in Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) with an RBI single to right. Sardigal then scored on Schroeder's single to center.

After a couple of scoreless frames S&T hung a three spot in the fifth taking advantage of two Bearcat (6-5) errors to make it 6-0.

Northwest scored one in the sixth to get on the board then sent 12 hitters to the plate in the seventh and scored six runs on four hits and took advantage of an error. Angela Wright tied the game with a two run single back up the middle. The Bearcats scored the go-ahead run on the error by the second baseman.

The Lady Miners put the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't get her in as they dropped their sixth straight.

Hatlan, Drage and Sardigal combined for six of S&T's 10 hits in the contest. Sardigal had three RBIs while Schroeder, Drage and Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) had one RBI each.

Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) took the loss allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit in 1/3 inning of work.

In the nightcap the Lady Miners erupted for five runs in the top of the third. Hatlan and Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) each drove in a pair of runs in the frame. S&T sent 10 batters to the dish and recorded five hits and took advantage of two Pittsburg State errors.

The Gorillas answered with three in the bottom half of the inning.

S&T pushed its lead to 7-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth as Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) and Kay. Smith had run scoring hits.

PSU tied the game with four in its half of the fourth. The big blow was a two-run homer to left center off the bat of DeCastro.

The Lady Miners had a golden opportunity to regain the lead in the sixth loading the bases with one out but couldn't score.

The Gorillas scored the eventual go-ahead run on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth.

S&T had 11 hits on the day led by Deibert, Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and Abby Lunn (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West ) with two apiece. Hatlan and Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) had two RBIs each as well.

Drage took the loss allowing a run on two hits while striking out one and walking three in two innings of work.

The Lady Miners are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Christian Brothers in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
