(Rolla, Mo.) – For just the third time in school history the Missouri S&T Lady Miners scored 10 runs in an inning in its doubleheader against Lindenwood on Thursday. The Lions won the opener 6-5, but S&T rebounded with 10 runs in the bottom of the first of game two en route to a 12-2 win in five innings at the S&T Softball Field.
The Lady Miners (6-18) fell behind 1-0 in the first inning of the nightcap before sending 14 batters to the plate in the home half of the inning. Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) and Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) hit back-to-back RBI singles to give S&T a 2-1 lead. Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) doubled home the third run and then with the bases loaded Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) doubled to the deepest part of the park to make it 5-1. After a walk to Lindsey Deforest loaded the bases back up, Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) crushed a grand slam to right center extending the lead to 9-1.
S&T wasn't done as Deibert doubled to left then Drage drove home her second run of the inning with a single to center. The Lady Miners had eight hits in the inning and took advantage of three walks.
S&T added to its lead in the third when Deibert hit an opposite field two-run homer to left to make it 12-1.
That was all the run support Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) needed as she kept Lindenwood's (13-13) bats in check giving up single tallies in the first and fifth on seven hits. She threw five innings striking out four while walking one.
The Lady Miners finished with 17 hits in the contest as 10 players had at least one hit. Five players had multi-hit games led by Deibert and Drage with three hits apiece. Briggs, Deibert, Drage and Kruse combined to drive in 11 of the 12 runs.
In the opener S&T jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Briggs led the game off with a double to left center. She moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single back up the middle off the bat of Deibert.
The Lions tied it with a run in the second before the Lady Miners regained the lead in the bottom of the second. Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) blooped in a two out double right in front of the center fielder scoring Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and Schroeder to give S&T a 3-1 lead.
Lindenwood took the lead in the third scoring five times all with two outs. Two of their run scoring hits were perfectly based balls that didn't leave the infield but a play couldn't be made by the defensive.
The Lady Miners clawed back with single runs in the fourth and fifth to get within 6-5 and had the tying run at second with two outs in the sixth but couldn't drive her in.
S&T had 10 hits in that contest led by Smith and Hatlan with two apiece. Hatlan drove in three runs.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) suffered the loss pitching a complete game allowing six runs on 13 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
S&T will be back on the road this weekend when it travels to Lewis University for a doubleheader against the Flyers on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m.
