Lady Miners swept by Knights

(Louisville, Ky.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were swept in its doubleheader at Bellarmine 3-2 and 10-2 in five innings on Sunday afternoon in Louisville.

In the opener S&T (5-17, 2-6 GLVC) scored the game's first run in the opening frame. Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) doubled home Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) with two outs. It remained that way until the sixth when the Lady Miners extended their lead. With two on and two out Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) came off the bench to deliver a pinch hit single to right scoring Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves).

The Knights (17-9, 6-2 GLVC) tied it in the bottom half of the inning on a single to center and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

Bellarmine won it in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single to left center with two on and one out.

S&T had nine hits in the first game led by Smith and Abby Lunn (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West ) with two each.

Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) was the tough luck loser allowing three runs on 11 hits while walking four. She also hit two batters.

In game two the Knights hung a three spot in the first then added a single tally in the third to take a 4-0 lead into the fourth.

Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) brought the Lady Miners back to within two on a two-run homer to right center.

Bellarmine extended its lead with a four spot in the bottom of the inning then added two more in the fifth for the final margin.

Five players had one hit for S&T in game two. Briggs pitched the first four innings allowing eight runs, but only two were earned, on 10 hits she walked one and had a pair of strikeouts. Jennifer Sardigal (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) pitched the fifth inning giving up two runs on three hits.

S&T returns home to play Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader next Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m.
