(Rolla, Mo.) – For the second straight day the Missouri S&T Lady Miners won the opener of a doubleheader but couldn't quite finish off the sweep as it split with Southern Indiana on Sunday. S&T won the opener 5-4 in eight innings and lost the nightcap 6-5.

In the opener Southern Indiana (12-8, 3-1 GLVC) scored the game's first run in the opening inning. Stephanie Bittner led off the game with a double to left and scored three batters later on Brittany DeWeese's single to left. The Screaming Eagles still had two on with one out but couldn't add to the lead.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the second when they scored a pair of unearned runs off a dropped infield pop-up.

S&T (3-13, 2-2 GLVC) got two of those runs back in the third with four straight hits. Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) singled with one out and scored on Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland)'s double to left center. Deibert then came around to score on Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)'s single to left. Lindsey DeForest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway) came on to pinch run for Smith and stole second but both runners were left stranded.

The Lady Miners took the lead with two in the fourth thanks to a couple of errors by the USI defense.

The Screaming Eagles tied it in the fifth with a run on a double down the left field line.

Neither side scored in the next two innings, but both threatened. In the eighth Southern Indiana put the go-ahead run but Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) got out of the jam getting Bittner to pop-up to short.

In the bottom of the inning S&T's first two hitters grounded out before Jennifer Sardigal (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) worked a four pitch walk. Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) then worked a full count and lined a double down the left field line. Heather Swarts bobbled the ball which allowed Sardigal to score from first with the game winner.

The Lady Miners had 10 hits in the contest led by Deibert, Smith and Briggs who combined for six of them. Keal went the distance allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts against three walks to improve to 2-5.

In the nightcap the Screaming Eagles again jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the opening frame on RBI singles from DeWeese and Katherine Belsito.

S&T got one of those runs back in the second as Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) came in to score from third on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder.

Southern Indiana got that run back in the third as DeWeese drove in her second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left scoring Dani Finkelstein.

The Lady Miners took the lead in the fourth with four runs. Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) started it with a two-out double to left center. Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came in to run for her and scored on Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville)'s single back up the middle. With two on Briggs launched a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence for a three-run blast making it 5-3.

The Screaming Eagles answered with one in the fifth and then took the lead in the seventh with a pair of hard hit balls and a blooper into shallow left.

S&T threatened in the bottom of the inning loading the bases with two outs, but Kruse's line drive back up the middle was snared by the pitcher off her shoe tops.

The Lady Miners had 11 hits in the second game led by Smith with three. Deibert, Drage and Briggs had two each. Drage suffered the loss in relief allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk in two innings of work.

S&T will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Lincoln University in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
