Box Score (Indianapolis, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners got the start it was looking for in its semifinal match against #17 Lewis by taking the opening set. Unfortunately it couldn't maintain the momentum as the Flyers charged back to win the next three to win the match
3-1 (29-27, 17-25, 20-25, 11-25) in the semifinals of the GLVC tournament at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center in Indianapolis, Ind., on Saturday evening.
In the opening set Lewis (25-5) led 24-21 before S&T (24-9) ran off the next three points to tie it at 24-all. The Flyers again had set point on a kill from Danielle Mount, but the Lady Miners wouldn't yield the set quite yet.
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and
Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) combined for a block on the next point to tie it back up then Wright gave S&T the lead with a kill. Kelly McKonkey tied it back up at 26-26. Wright had another kill to make it 27-26, but Leigh Barea tied it back up with a tip kill into the backcourt. The Lady Miners won the set as
Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) recorded back-to-back kills ending the frame.
In the second set S&T held a 5-4 lead before Lewis went on a 12-2 run to take a 16-7 lead. The Lady Miners closed to within 19-15 but couldn't get any closer than that as the Flyers scored six of the final eight points to square the match.
Lewis scored five of the first six points in set three before S&T got within 7-4 after back-to-back Flyer errors. They proceeded to go on a 10-1 run to build its largest lead of the set at 17-5. S&T chipped away getting within seven points but Lewis stretched it back to eight. The Lady Miners ran off a string of six points getting within 23-20 on an ace from
Jennifer Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy). Lewis however scored the final two points to take the 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was tied at 2-2 when the Flyers ran off six straight and wouldn't look back on their way to a the win.
S&T had no answer for Lewis's blocking as it finished the match with 15 blocks and forced the Lady Miners into 27 errors in the match.
S&T had a .110 attack percentage in the match and was led by Wright with 16 kills. Bekebrede added 12 more.
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had 36 assists while
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) added 23 digs.
The Flyers hit 30 percent for the match and finished with 59 kills led by Mount with 20. Jen Krumwiede contributed 15 to the attack while Hannah Koeneman had 11. Barea distributed 49 assists while Amy Choi had 23 digs.
S&T will find out its NCAA Tournament status on Sunday evening at 9 p.m. The Lady Miners stand a good chance at advancing to the tournament for the first time in school history.
