Box Score (Indianapolis, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners picked up another first on Friday by defeating Missouri-St. Louis
3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-10) in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament. S&T (24-8) won its first ever postseason match and strengthened its chances of advancing to the NCAA Tournament with the win.
The Lady Miners, seeded third, came out strong in the opening set hitting 22.6 percent and shut down the Triton, seeded sixth, (19-10) attack limiting to just 6.1 percent. S&T's defense was solid recording 15 digs and had three total blocks.
Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) and
Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) combined for 11 of the team's 14 kills.
S&T broke an 8-8 tie with a 7-1 run to take control of the set. The lead grew to seven before UMSL got within four but no closer.
The second set started playing out the same way as the first. It was tied 8-all when the Lady Miners scored six of the next nine points to take a 14-11 lead. The lead grew to 21-17 before the Tritons came back within 22-21. S&T refused to let go scoring three of the final four points to take the 2-0 lead.
The Lady Miners hit 27.5 percent in the set while UMSL hit 20.0 percent. Bekebrede had seven kills while Zellmer added five more. S&T again had three total blocks in the frame.
The third set was all Lady Miners breaking open a 4-4 tie with an 11-1 run to take the 10 point advantage. The Tritons closed to within 17-9 before S&T quickly extended its lead back to double digits. Fittingly S&T had back-to-back blocks to end the match.
The Lady Miners finished the match with 42 kills and hit 26.9 percent. They also had 12 total blocks, 46 digs and 41 assists.
Bekebrede and Zellmer had 13 kills apiece while
Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center) added seven.
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 36 assists while
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 15 digs. Bekebrede and
Jennifer Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) had nine digs apiece.
UMSL finished the match with 25 kills and hit 2.9 percent. Erin Higgins and Weslie Gaff had seven kills apiece to lead the Tritons. Anna McNulty dished out 20 assists while Alisha Skaggs had 11 digs.
S&T will play the winner of the Drury/Lewis quarterfinal match in the semifinals on Saturday at 4 p.m. (CST) in Indianapolis, Ind.
