ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team continued its drive to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and a possible first round home game in the event by winning its third consecutive contest Friday, taking a
2-0 decision over Lewis at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners and Flyers, along with Quincy, entered the day in a three-way tie for fifth place in the GLVC standings. The third and fourth place teams in the standings, Indianapolis and Drury, both lost Friday and Drury's loss allowed S&T and Quincy to move into a tie for fourth with two games remaining and only one-half game in back of UIndy for third.
In Friday's contest, the Miners struck quickly to grab an early lead. Just 2:33 into the contest,
Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ) played a ball to the top of the box that
Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) drilled into the upper corner of the net to give the Miners the lead.
S&T was able to hold the Flyers at bay from there, allowing six shots in the opening half but none of them reaching goalkeeper
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ).
The Miners added to their lead at the 55:25 mark in the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick, which
Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) converted to make it 2-0.
S&T outshot the Flyers (7-7-1, 7-5-1 GLVC) by an 18-12 margin. McNamee was credited with the shutout in goal, although none of Lewis' 12 shots made it on net as the Miner defense blocked several of those efforts throughout the contest.
The Miners, 10-4-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the GLVC, will host Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday in a 2:30 p.m. game at the S&T Soccer Field. The S&T seniors will be honored prior to the start of Sunday's contest against a Ranger team that knocked off Drury 1-0 Friday evening.
