Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Lakeland, Fla.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners saw its two match winning streak to open the season snapped on Saturday dropping a tough five set match to Southwest Baptist 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 24-16, 12-15) and were swept by Florida Southern 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 17-25) at the Florida Southern/Holiday Inn Classic.

S&T (2-2) got off to a great start in the opener on Saturday winning the first set against SBU (2-2) hitting nearly 30 percent in the frame recording 17 kills including seven from Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled). The Bearcats held a four point lead in the set before the Lady Miners responded by scoring eight of the final 10 points of the stanza eventually winning it on a service ace by Annie Smith (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy).

The second set was a different story though as SBU hit 32.4 percent while holding the Lady Miners to under 10 percent. S&T had no answer for Ashley Jurgensmeyer in the frame as she had six kills against no errors in nine attempts. The Bearcats again built a four point lead but were able to hang on by scoring the final four points of the set to square the match.

The Lady Miners dominated the third set early building an eight point lead, but SBU clawed back to tie and eventually take the lead at 22-21. S&T had the answer though scoring the final four points on kills from Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) and Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and two Bearcat errors to take the 2-1 lead.

The Lady Miners again built a big advantage in set four, but were unable to close out SBU as it rallied from a five point deficit late to take a 24-23 lead. Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) tied it at 24 with a kill but Jurgensmeyer recorded back-to-back kills to force the fifth and deciding game.

The fifth and final set was tight throughout as there were nine ties and three lead changes. Neither side had a lead greater than a point through the first 17 points. S&T built an 11-9 lead, but couldn't quite close it out as the Bearcats regained the lead scoring four straight points. After an error by Jurgensmeyer made it 13-12, she set up match point with a kill then her teammate Joanna Granzow won it with a kill.

S&T finished the match with 59 kills led by Bekebrede and Klump with 16 and 15 respectively. As a team the Lady Miners hit 16 percent for the match. Costello finished the contest with 48 assists while Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) led all players with her 24 digs. Bekebrede dug up 23 balls to record her second double-double in three games.

Jurgensmeyer finished the match with 26 kills for SBU to lead all players.

In the nightcap it was all Florida Southern as they raced out to an early lead and were able to stretch it to as many as seven points. S&T would get as close as six but couldn't slow down the hot hitting Moccasin offense as they finished the set with 19 kills in 42 chances to hit 38.1 percent.

The second frame was tighter early on before FSC began to pull away about midway through and build a four point lead. The Lady Miners bounced back getting to within 18-16, but the Mocs scored five of the next eight points to extend their lead and take the set 25-20.

The third set belonged to Florida Southern as well as it nearly doubled S&T's hitting percentage 31 percent to 16 percent. The Lady Miners continued to battle strong staying within a couple of points at 18-16 but the Moccasins pulled away scoring seven of the final eight points to end the match.

Klump and Bekebrede again led the S&T offense with seven kills apiece. Costello finished with 19 assists while Williams had 12 digs.

Ashley Martin led three Florida Southern players in double figures with 12 kills. Lauren Huber had 11 while Anne Pietkiewicz dropped in 10. Kendall Wilde finished with 18 assists and Anna Niebuhr had 16 digs.

For her efforts Klump was named to the Florida Southern/Holiday Inn Classic All-Tournament team.

The Lady Miners open their home schedule this Friday hosting the Super 8/Days Inn & Suites/Middle of Everywhere Classic against Upper Iowa starting at 2 p.m.
