(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners gave it everything it had, but unfortunately came up on the short end of a
2-1 contest against Wisconsin-Parkside to open the 2010 season on Sunday.
S&T (0-1, 0-1 GLVC) came out strong and had the game's first scoring chance in the seventh minute. Leah Williams (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) lined a shot headed for the near post but Cassie Glodowski was able to get a hand on and deflect it wide.
Parkside (1-1, 1-0 GLVC) then began to take control for the next 10 minutes and got the first goal on a breakaway inside the far post from Shannon Becker at the 18:22 mark. She almost added another three minutes later but Kelsey Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) made the save denying her attempt.
The Lady Miners had a chance to tie it in the 24th minute off a free kick. Shelly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy Springs) blasted one off the crossbar and then on the ensuing corner Kim Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) sent a shot wide of the target.
S&T had another chance with about seven minutes left in the stanza when Jaclyn Standfast (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) had a shot from inside the penalty box but she kicked it right to the keeper.
The Rangers held a slight edge in shots in the first 6-4 and both sides put two shots on frame.
The Lady Miners started the second half strong as well eventually tying it in the 55th when Morgan Lockowitz (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin ) converted on a penalty kick for her first goal of the season.
It wouldn't stay tied for long though as Becker ran down a thru ball from Kelsey Armour and beat Kurilla for her second goal of the game just over four minutes later.
S&T had one more scoring chance with just over three minutes remaining in the contest but Lockowitz's shot was turned by Glodowski.
For the game Parkside held a slight edge in shots 9-8, but the Lady Miners outshoot them 5-4 in shots on goal.
Becker led the Rangers with five shots, three on goal; while Lockowitz had two, both on goal, for S&T.
The Lady Miners head out on the road this weekend for a quick two game swing beginning Friday night at Illinois-Springfield beginning at 5 p.m.
