(Lakeland, Fla.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners opened its 2010 campaign with a pair of wins Friday at the Florida Southern/Holiday Inn Classic in Lakeland, Fla.
In the opener on Friday the Lady Miners swept past Montevallo 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-17). In their second match against Angelo State, S&T picked up a 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-22 and 25-23) decision over the Rambelles.
Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) and Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) paced the Lady Miner (2-0) offense in the opener as they accounted for 25 of the team's 35 kills and hit nearly 47 percent for the match. Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) added six kills while Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 31 assists and Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 15 digs.
Bekebrede finished the match with a double-double recording 11 digs to go along with her kill total. She had five kills in the opening set and closed out the match strong recording seven kills in 10 chances with no errors in the final set.
Klump had four kills in each of the three sets while committing only one attack error in 20 chances to finish the match hitting 55 percent. She also accounted for two of the team's four blocks.
The Lady Miners were on fire in the third set recording 14 kills against only three errors to finish the frame hitting 31.4 percent.
As a team S&T hit nearly 20 percent for the match and held the Falcons (0-1) to a .036 hitting percentage and forced them into 24 attack errors.
The match had 19 ties and nine lead changes as S&T was able to pull away late in each of the three sets to earn the victory.
In the nightcap the Lady Miners got off to a strong start hitting 37.6 percent in the opening frame recording 14 kills in 30 attempts against three errors. Klump and Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center) led the charge in the opening set knocking down seven of their eight chances.
S&T cooled off a little in the second hit hitting just over 18 percent but still finished with 12 kills against only four errors in 43 attempts. Klump and Bekebrede led the S&T offense in set two with eight kills but it wasn't enough as ASU (0-2) hitting 25 percent in the frame to square the match at 1-1.
The Lady Miners held a five point lead early before Angelo State charged back to tie it. It remained a tight match until 19 all when S&T ran off four of the next five points to build a 23-20 lead.
The 'Belles got within two a couple of times but Bekebrede put the set away with a kill to give the Lady Miners a 2-1 advantage.
S&T had another strong hitting set in the third recording 11 kills against one error in 38 chances. Bekebrede and Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) led the way with seven kills.
In the final set the Lady Miners got off to another strong start before ASU came back to tie and eventually take the lead late at 19-18. S&T held strong and rallied to win the set on a block by Klump.
The Lady Miners finished the match with 47 kills in 151 chances against 18 errors to finish the match hitting 19.2 percent. Klump and Bekebrede again led the charge combining for 26 kills. Spears contributed seven while Wright had six.
Costello handed out 36 assists while Williams led three players in double figures with 18 digs.
S&T returns to action on Saturday for a pair of games against Southwest Baptist and Florida Southern beginning at 2 p.m.
