(Warrensburg, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners ran into a buzz saw on Tuesday night as it fell to the ninth ranked Central Missouri Jennies 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-11) in Warrensburg.
The Lady Miners (7-6) got off to a good start in the opening frame and were hanging tough with the Jennies (11-3) 13-12. UCM then ran off six straight points to take a commanding 19-12 and S&T wouldn't get any closer than six points the rest of the set.
The Lady Miners had nine kills in 30 chances in the opening frame. Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West), Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled), Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) and Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center) had two kills apiece to lead the Lady Miners.
The Jens on the other hand hit 48 percent in the opening set and recorded 14 kills led by Bradye Peniston with five.
The second set was all Central Missouri as it led from to start to finish. S&T hung close early but the Jens used another long run about midway through the frame to take a commanding lead and win the set 25-14.
The Lady Miners struggled in the second set recording only four kills against 10 errors in 35 chances. Klump had two kills to lead S&T. Central Missouri on the other hand hit 22.6 percent and recorded 13 kills in 31 chances. Taylor Goodness led the Jennies with four kills.
The Lady Miners got down 8-2 in the final set and would eventually cut it to 8-5 but that would be the closest they got as the Jens used a 13-5 run to pull away and win the match 25-11.
S&T finished with 19 kills in 98 chances while UCM had 41 kills in 87 chances. Bekebrede, Klump and Wright led the Lady Miners with four kills apiece. Peniston had 11 kills to lead the Jennies.
S&T returns home this weekend to begin a three-game homestand against Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday night starting at 7 p.m.
