(Rensselaer, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners hit a very respectable 37.2 percent but unfortunately couldn't slow down the Saint Joseph Puma offense in a 3-0 (19-25, 23-25, 21-25) loss on Saturday afternoon in Rensselaer, Ind.
Each team got off to great starts offensively in the opening set as the Lady Miners (7-5, 2-2 GLVC) hit 39 percent but it was the Pumas (5-8, 1-3 GLVC) who had the upper hand as they hit 45.2 percent. SJC recorded 17 kills in 31 chances compared to S&T's nine kills in 18 opportunities.
The Pumas were able to take the opener 25-19.
The Lady Miners hit 48 percent in the second set and had 11 kills against only one error in 21 chances but weren't able to square the match as Saint Joseph's won the frame 25-23 despite hitting 31 percent.
In the final set the Pumas hit 40 percent recording 18 kills against only two errors in 40 opportunities. S&T wasn't too bad either in the last frame hitting 30.8 percent with 15 kills against three errors in 39 chances.
Saint Joseph's finished the match with 49 kills against 10 errors in 100 opportunities to finish with a 39 percent hitting percentage. The Lady Miners on the other hand had 35 kills against only six errors in 22 fewer chances to finish at 37 percent.
Sharon Freund led three Puma players in double figures with 11 kills. Leah Zehme and Maggie Walters added 10 apiece. Erin Brocker had 35 assists while Courtney Bast dug up 13 balls.
Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) and Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) finished with 11 and nine kills respectively. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 33 assists while Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 11 digs.
The Lady Miners return to action this coming Tuesday at Central Missouri beginning at 6 p.m.
