(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners gave up two goals in the first four minutes of the game and were never able to recover dropping a 3-0 contest to Quincy on Sunday afternoon in Rolla. The loss snapped S&T's three match winning streak.
The Hawks (4-1-2, 2-0-2 GLVC) scored the game's first goal just 1:51 into the game on a goal by Brittany Casey from Annie Ubriaco. Quincy added to its lead 1:22 later when Ubriaco took a shot from near the sideline and was deflected in by the Lady Miner (3-2, 3-2 GLVC) defense.
S&T had its opportunities to cut into the early lead. In the seventh minute Paige Smothers (Marion, Ill./Marion) hit a long shot that was saved by the keeper and then two minutes later Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) had a chance but she too was denied.
Morgan Lockowitz (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin ) had a shot as well in the 25th minute that was saved by the keeper.
The Hawks got the game's final goal at the 37:01 mark from Liz Werkmeister from inside the box.
Quincy finished the frame outshooting the Lady Miners 9-3 and 5-3 in shots on goal.
The Hawks pretty much dominated the play in the second half outshooting S&T 10-3, though the Lady Miners had a couple of scoring opportunities that were turned away.
Quincy finished the game with 19 shots to just six for S&T, but shots on goal were a lot closer with the Hawks having the slight edge 6-5.
The Lady Miners return to action next Sunday when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury University beginning at 2:30 p.m.
