(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners swept past Illinois-Springfield 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-19) on Friday night at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
The opening set was tight early with a pair of ties before the Lady Miners (6-3, 1-0 GLVC) went on a 4-0 run to grab a lead. The two sides began swapping points before S&T ran off 10 straight points to build its lead to 19-7. Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) combined for nine of the 10 kills in the run. S&T went on to finish off the set on an assisted block by Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center) and Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) to win 25-12.
The Lady Miners hit 44.1 percent in the opening set and held the Prairie Stars (3-7, 0-1 GLVC) to a zero hitting percentage.
The second set was all S&T as it led from start to finish as it raced out of the gates scoring nine of the first 12 points. UIS eventually cut the gap to 10-7, but that would be as close as it got as the Lady Miners used another long run to pull away late for the commanding 2-0 lead. 
S&T's offense cooled in the second set recording only 14 kills, but committed seven errors to finish with an 18.4 hitting percentage. Defensively the Lady Miners were sound holding the Prairie Stars to just 10.3 percent.
In the final set, S&T again raced out of the gates to an early lead. Illinois-Springfield eventually worked its way back in to the set tying it at 10-all. It stayed tied for the next couple of points until the Lady Miners went on a 12-4 run to set up match point. 
The Prairie Stars staved off three match points but couldn't fight off a fourth as Klump hammered home a kill to give S&T the win.
The Lady Miners hit well again in the third set converting on 38 percent of their opportunities and finished the match at 33 percent.
Klump, Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) and Wright led the S&T offense as the trio accounted for 41 of the team's 52 kills. Klump led the way with 16. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had 44 assists while Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 16 digs.
UIS was held to just 12 percent for the match and was led by Courtnee Brown with six kills.
The Lady Miners return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Quincy University beginning at 3 p.m.
