(East Peoria, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners kept its season going for one more day as it held on to defeat Southern Indiana
4-3 in an elimination game at the GLVC Tournament on Friday in East Peoria, Ill.
S&T jumped on top in the third inning getting an RBI single through the left side from Kassi Deibert scoring Jennifer Sardigal. With runners at the corner and one out Kaylea Smith drove home Kristen Drage with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0.
Coley Naughton gave the Lady Miners a 3-0 lead in the fourth hitting a lead-off home run. For Naughton it was her fifth roundtripper of the season.
Naughton made it 4-0 in the sixth hitting an RBI single through the left side to drive in Kate Runyan who started the inning with a single up the middle.
Things got interesting in the bottom of the seventh with S&T still holding a four run lead. Taylor Keal retired the first two first hitters before allowing a single through the right side to Amanda Brendel. Stephanie Bitter cut the lead in half hitting a two run homer to left center. After an error allowed another runner to reach, Tara McConnell singled to right to put runners on the corner.
LeAnn Collins made it 4-3 with a double to left center driving in Katherine Belsito and put McConnell at third with the tying run. With the tying and winning runs on base the Lady Miners intentionally walked Sara Loete to face Brittany DeWeese. DeWeese, who won an earlier meeting between the two sides with a walk-off single, was unable to come through as she grounded out to Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS) to end the game.
S&T finished the game with 11 hits led by Drage, Deibert, Naughton and Smith with two each.
Keal improved to 15-10 by tossing a complete game. She allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out two and walked two more.
The Lady Miners will play Indianapolis in another elimination game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
