Lady Miners rally from four run deficit, but fall to Lewis 6-5 at GLVC Tournament

Box Score (East Peoria, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners rallied from 4-0 deficit, but weren't able to hold onto a 5-4 lead as it fell 6-5 to Lewis in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament on Friday.

The Lady Miners (26-22) had their opportunities in the first three innings but were unable to come through with a two out hit.

The Flyers (34-15) jumped on top scoring four times in the bottom of the third. A wild pitch brought in the first run, then Mary Giancarlo singled up the middle to drive in the second run. With two outs an error in left field allowed the final two runs of the inning to score.

S&T tried to come back in the fourth getting two on with two out but Kaylea Smith struck out looking to end the inning. The Lady Miners finally broke through in the fifth getting back-to-back one out singles from Kristen Drage and Kassi Deibert. Maggie Schroeder came off the bench to pinch hit for Kate Runyan and hit a three run homer to left to make it a one run ball game.

S&T completed the rally in the sixth loading the bases with one out. Drage flew out to center then Deibert came through with a two-run single through the left side scoring Krista Porterfield and Lauren Briggs to make it 5-4.

Lewis had a chance to regain the lead in the sixth getting the go ahead run to second with two outs but a groundout to Taylor Keal ended the inning.

The Flyers won the game the seventh scoring two times. With one out Stephanie Harmon reached on a single. She advanced to second on a throwing error by Keal on a ball hit by Giancarlo to put runners at first and second. Sarah Hurley tied the game with a double down the right field line. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Keal got Lauren Hanford to ground into a fielder's choice to short as Porterfield threw Giancarlo out at the plate.

Lewis would win it on the next batter as Traci Freitag singled to third base to drive in the winning run.

The Lady Miners finished with 11 hits in the game led by Deibert with three and Porterfield with two. Schroeder and Deibert accounted for all five RBIs.

Ashley Wallingford started the game going the first 2.2 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits while walking three and striking out two. Keal went the final four innings allowing two unearned runs on five hits while issuing two free passes.
