(St. Louis, Mo.) – Kristen Drage hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth of game one to give the Missouri S&T Lady Miners a 5-1 win over Maryville on Wednesday at Missouri-St. Louis, In the nightcap she hit a solo homer in the fourth inning of S&T's 1-0 win in earning the sweep.
In the opener the Lady Miners (26-19, 16-10 GLVC) got on the board in the first inning on a Coley Naughton RBI single through the right side to score Drage. S&T had a chance for more in the frame but couldn't come through with another two out hit.
Ashley Wallingford started strong for the Lady Miners setting down the first nine hitters she faced before an error in the fourth inning gave the Saints (17-30, 7-19 GLVC) their first base runner. That runner was erased though on the next play when she was thrown at third to complete the back end of a double play on a sacrifice bunt.
With two outs the Saints loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk but Wallingford got out of the jam getting a grounder to Naughton to end the inning.
S&T had a golden opportunity to extend its lead in the fourth but Stefani Moore was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single by Kate Runyan. They ended up leaving two on in that frame and two more in the fifth.
Maryville tied it in the seventh getting a one out walk to start its rally. A wild pitch moved the runner to second then a groundout to Drage moved her over to third. The tying run scored on a wild pitch.
The Lady Miners had a chance to win it in the seventh getting the winning run to second with one out but a pop out and a grounder to short ended that frame.
The Saints threatened in the ninth putting two on with two out before Wallingford got out of the jam getting a grounder to short to end the frame.
S&T won it in the ninth getting a lead-off single from Katie Smith. Lindsey DeForest came on to pinch run and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Krista Porterfield. Kaylea Smith then came on to pinch hit and dropped one in over the outstretched arm of the second baseman to put runners on the corner. Maryville elected to intentionally walk Jennifer Sardigal to load the bases for Drage. She got ahead in the count 2-0 then hammered her grand slam to left center to win it.
Drage and Runyan had two hits apiece in the contest while six others had a hit.
Wallingford went the distance allowing a run on four hits, struck out five and walked two to improve to 11-10.
The second game was scoreless through the first 3 ½ innings until Drage led off the fourth with her second home run of the day.
That was all the support Taylor Keal needed as she faced two batters over the minimum in the game. She set down the first 10 hitters she faced before allowing a one out double to Brittany Ponder in the fourth. She then retired the next nine hitters she faced before giving up a one out single in the seventh to Kristen Bray.
It didn't matter though as she got the next two hitters to strike out swinging to end the game.
She tossed her third shutout of the season allowing just the two hits while striking out seven in the complete game effort to improve to 14-8.
Drage, Runyan and Becky Davis had all three of S&T's hits in game two.
